Hurricane Category 4 Hurricane Helene

Horrific flooding in Asheville.

Even though the track moved further away from me, my evening/overnight was still busy due to my weather radios alerting me..

8:38pm (Thu) - Flash Flood Warning issued for Lee, Russell Co (AL)

12:10am (Fri) - Flash Flood Warning issued for Chattahoochee Co (GA)

12:58am - Flash Flood Warning issued for Chattahoochee, Muscogee Co (GA)

1:23am - Flash Flood Warning issued for Chattahoochee, and Muscogee Co (GA)

2:16am - Flash Flood warning issued for Russell Co (AL)

5:17am - Tropical Storm Warning expanded to include Chattahoochee Co (GA) (Hurricane Warning for this county was cancelled and replaced by the TS Warning).

I’m turning flood alerts off again…. Until next week (maybe)

Ugh.

Looking ahead a day or two, the landslide risk is there, too, and to visualize a worst-case scenario (maybe), and since I think news coverage of Myanmar really doesn't show the extent, here's an expert on that disaster a few days ago, followed by this layperson non-expert's reasons why it probably won't be quite that bad for us, but...

Ex-Helene (as it will be at this point); the wave of tropical moisture coming up: and the various processes, which I don't fully understand, of extratropical transition -- all of these wet/windy weather factors affecting a single mountainous region, one that has already had plenty of rainfall, for some time -- this is bad.

What folks in Myanmar had going against them was the additional component of monsoon rains as well as the typhoon AND tropical soil (maybe steeper slopes and a burn-scar factor, too -- I don't know).

Please don't quote me on this, and I haven't read Dave's Eos post yet, but that soil might contain impermeable hard pans that could turn into slip planes, and its surface layers might be pretty shallow, too.

That last probably means shallow rooting of vegetation and less strength, compared to Appalachian vegetation, for holding slope soil in place.

Trouble is, a lot of that Appalachian vegetation still has its wind sails unfurled and the "anchors" usually come up when the "masts" go down.

My concern is that landslides have no precursors and often are unexpected. I don't think we'll see that Myanmar level of disaster, and I hope it doesn't get anywhere near that bad.

But the potential is there. :(

Outages in KY still going up, but not nearly the density of further south of course.

A little over 4 million total for Helene.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but a confirmed tornado currently ongoing near Rocky Mount, NC, very close to where a surprise EF3 touched down last year.

Headed right for Battleboro! Not good!
edit: Debris signature has subsided and warning downgraded to radar indicated. Still, may have had a strong touchdown there.

I'm sorry for all the damage and impacts of course, but for a weather nerd who took a couple days off work for this one, this has been an amazing event meteorologically. Just wow, even now.

Very memorable for sure, and likely one for the books.

Power outages are extensive across the eastern third of Georgia. In South Carolina, around 40% of folks are without power, mostly in the western half of the state. Outages are also widespread in western NC and far western VA.

Unfortunately, getting reports of significant damage from the Rocky Mount tornado including a medical supply store collapsed and 18-wheelers overturned.

Saw this report from WRAL. At least 4 injuries:

"2:00 p.m.: At least four injuries are reported in Rocky Mount and several structures were destroyed in the areas of Tiffany Boulevard, Benvenue Road and the Golden East Crossing shopping mall, Nash County confirms. A tornado was confirmed to touch down in that area at 1:30 p.m."
