Today is the one-year anniversary of the Winterset, IA EF4 which killed six people. Iowa's first official violent tornado since October 2013, and deadliest tornado since Parkersburg in 2008.

An EF1 tornado also occurred near Stoughton, Wisconsin (not far from the path of the deadly August, 2005 F3) later that night, despite the fact that according to short-term CAM forecast soundings there should have been zero surface-based instability present.

I'm not sure what that person was thinking about when he said that tornadoes doesn't exist in Indonesia
One would think that with the advent of the Internet and corresponding ability to almost instantly access reliable information, the many myths and legends surrounding tornadoes would be dispelled. But it honestly seems with social media, the opposite has happened...

With that said, off topic.

Damage photos I found from the 1987 Edmonton tornado.

For my 2,011th post, there is only one logical course of action.

Some damage photos from the Rayne, LA tornado in March. This tornado killed one person, a mother sheltering her one year old infant; the child survived.

Incredible footage of the Collins, MS EF1 from early in the Super Outbreak. I remember seeing this video years ago and didn't find it again until recently.

This tornado needs no introduction. Footage was filmed around the time the Chastain Manor apartments ware largely destroyed, killing two people.

Damage from the Reading, KS EF3 the day before Joplin. This tornado claimed one life, a man who was killed when his mobile home was destroyed.

Another tornado that needs no introduction:
Joplin-EF5-damage-tower-debarking.JPG

The tornado hit its first peak in intensity along West 26th Street, in an area immediately northeast of St. John's Hospital. Many homes and businesses were completely swept away here, including a house that sustained collapse of a poured concrete basement wall, and this well built brick business. Before and after:

Some videos from June 20 and November 16, some of 2011's more forgotten outbreaks:

Didn't even mention the Goderich, Ontario F3 tornado that claimed one life on August 21. And of course, the wrath of 2011's tornadoes was not limited to North America; Vietnam, Chile and Russia among others saw strong and/or deadly tornadoes.

Interesting tidbit about the Rayne, LA tornado. The house the fatality occurred in was completely flattened, but it was due to a massive tree falling on the small home, rather the wind itself.

The vehicle damage in some of those Edmonton photos is pretty high end, yet nothing in those photos screams F5 damage to me. I still think the high-end F4 rating is appropriate for this thing.

All the original papers/articles I could find in Edmonton say that was actually rated low-end F4 based on leveled industrial buildings. One also mentioned that there was no evidence of any F5 damage.

Everybody probably already knows this, but I didn't know that Double Creek estates had an extremely close call with another tornado last March? I knew Jarrell had some tornadoes near it last year, but apparently the neighborhood barely dodged an EF1. A MUCH weaker tornado, but still. FOk9s6IXoAEd4wx.jpgQZYWZRXT65AEXIM2RACHT3GU2E.png

Well, the grass scouring, massive oil tank being thrown and landing upside and at least one car having an engine torn out suggest it was more than low end. At least to me.

I would agree that the contextual damage was suggestive of a higher end F4. Also on another note what I find to be the most interesting about Edmonton is it’s status as the westernmost violent tornado in North America.

I mean it makes sense since the Canadian prairies extend further west than the plains do in the US.

ERA5 got a back-extension to 1940 recently and the data is now available. Lots of the cases in the 1940s worth examining, such at these two...

Tornado Archive will be updating its environmental viewer accordingly to account for this additional data.

I think it's the northernmost violent tornado as well. It formed more than 350 miles north of the American border.
