Happy new year everyone! We have a very cold beginning to 2018.

A weak vort max over N AL/ S mid TN is giving some of us snow flurries and a light dusting in N AL as far south as Cullman, which should dissipate this afternoon. Elsewhere, high pressure will build over the coming days which keeps the bitter cold air hanging around for awhile. Next week there's potential for some moisture influx and a disturbance moving through the Ohio valley which may give us our next shot at some precipitation - likely rain.

Pretty healthy looking system (from a kinematics standpoint) on the Euro for next Sunday/Monday. Probably would feature some stronger storms verbatim...

A few summers ago I remember being real sick of 25 Celsius dewpoints and severe thunderstorms pretty much every other day. After about 3 weeks of -10 Celsius and below with nonstop blowing snow, I actually really miss it.

Happy New Year! Someone close the door up north please!!!

We need a good ole fashioned North Alabama snow to go along with all this cold. It seems kinda weird that places way south are getting snow and we are getting the shaft. Thankfully we've still got a ways to go as its only early January.

Another overnight snow along coastal regions of the Gulf (even oil platforms!). I was sound asleep, but I heard there were a few flurries in the NOLA metro.

The last time Savannah, GA got >1" of snow was 30 years ago. The record is 3.6" set in 1968.
But that's just Savannah, it's been snowing 60 miles south of there. Quite a delightful surprise for many I'm sure
Not to mention Florida!

Just amazing to see these snow reports coming from Southern Georgia and Florida. Even more amazing to look out and not see a flake anywhere near here.

Up to 44° in Montgomery this afternoon. Feels like a heat wave! But we'll be back down into the upper teens to around 20 for a low tonight.

Meanwhile, Charleston, SC will have one of their snowiest days on record.

Would be nice if the models weren't trending toward a CAD event for Atlanta for the championship game Monday.
Euro has been keeping the high pressure around longer than the GFS, resulting in a cold wedge around east AL, if that holds true there will likely be a wintery mix for Atlanta if the precipitation can flux in quickly.. and with the strength of the low level flow I wouldn't be surprised if that materializes. I'm curious to see if 00z continues the trend
