Hurricane Category 4 Hurricane Helene

Another important note: Southern Georgia is an area with high historical and contemporary levels of social vulnerability; these are already critically-underserved areas and the toll of the storm will be further emphasized by poverty, lags in housing quality, inability of many folks to maintain house insurance and limited medical & social services infrastructure.

Yeah, a lot of southwest and south-central Georgia is in the Black Belt, and a lot of what isn't is very rural and not especially well off economically, aside from places like Lowndes/Camden/Houston/Liberty Cos. that have military bases etc. to create a stronger economic base.

Found this while making a blog post that collects information on the landslides:

Edit: Dave Petley reposted that one!

Here's the blog post -- a work in progress. Though limited and definitely not scientific, it seemed the best way to get an idea of the landslides caused by this system.

Well I survived and didn't get blown away but a tree fell on my camper crushing the back end bedroom. Lots of trees fell in upstate SC mountains and power is still out here. Just got cell service back yesterday. And of course my car chose to die so lots of work to do. Will post more when power cones back on. Hope y'all all fared OK- worst aftermath of TS or hurricane I've ever seen here

So sorry about the damage, but glad you're alright. The damage has been horrific.

It’s been three days after the storm and there still has been pretty much nothing in the form of news of what has occurred other than word of mouth.

It’s like we progressed back into the mid 90s in terms of getting information out, and it isn’t because of incompetence either, it’s literally the shear scope of total destruction this flooding event caused.

There's still a ton of areas that haven't been reached by outsiders. I think the staggering number of road obstructions or outright washouts are probably a huge factor, and it's difficult to know how long it'll take to get to everywhere.

This may wind up as one of the worst humanitarian crises our country has faced since Katrina, and I don't say that lightly.
I'm really hoping for minimal loss of life up in NC, but the physical devastation alone will take years, probably decades, to fully recover from.

Thread of damage from Marshall, NC. Like many affected areas, lots of buildings are completely gone, and those that remain standing have severe water damage.

Good grief jumped from 50 fatalities yesterday night to 100+ today
Yeah. Western NC espicially hit hard. The steep mountains and deepvalley streams and rivers will be producing victims for at least another month. Yes a month because it will take that long to search all the to we snag a after th

There are dozens of communities completely isolated with roads washed out and no cell service or power. Only one road connecting Asheville to the outside (Interstate 26 south) and it's a hub with many highways passing through there.I'm familiar with the area just 40 minutes from here normally and I just can't wrap my head around how bad that has to be. It will be several days to reach all areas and many will be helicopter only. They'll be pulling bodies from rivers for maybe a month.

Were managing here with temporary repairs mostly done. We're lucky with all we need to get the neighbors and us through. The. Electric co-o.o says it may be over a week before me we get power back. My friends generator is enough to keep neighbors freezers and hers good. We got lucky and found gas today so we can go awhile now. That's the bug issue

Going to be dozens more once they can get into the isolated communities of WNC. Roads cell service and power gone in lots of rural areas.
I got temporary repairs done to the camper And we found gas for the generator. Power company says I may be over a week more till we get power but we and the neighbors are good. News is hard to find but WNC sounds almost like it was nuked so I'm not going to complain
