Severe Weather 2025

Something that doesn't happen super often around these parts: thunderstorms producing very little precipitation are bubbling up in the Atlanta metro. The tallest storm only just started producing precipitation over the last few scans, despite towers going up to 35k/40k ft before that. Good bit of lightning coming from it as well.

That reminded me of a recent thread over on the Stormtrack forums regarding research into the validity of that model:

Research to confirm or debunk funnel vs tornado paradigm

The current paradigm in meteorology is to assume that all observed funnels are not tornadoes unless there is evidence to the contrary (a visible ground circulation/condensed subvortices/debris cloud or damage after the fact). To my knowledge, there is no evidence or research behind this...

Basically, it's looking to research how often funnel clouds may actually have had invisible circulations extending to the ground. Given recent research showing that at least some tornadoes form starting at/near the ground and extending upward (as opposed to the previously longstanding view that tornadoes form in the parent storms and extend down to the ground), this research actually does feel pertinent to that kind of discussion, as it suggests that there is indeed the possibility of at least some "funnel clouds" actually being fully-fledged (if not fully-condensed) tornadoes.
