Severe Weather 2025

I will not chase this, I will not chase this, I will not chase this, I will not chase this.
I'm gonna be real with y'all, I think the Iowa/MN severe weather "event" broke me lol I ended up blowing over $200 in gas and food, which doesn't include a $75 citation I got in the mail from Iowa's (Cedar Rapids specifically) speed camera system.

Hey at least you got to see the straightest roads and the flattest land in the whole country!

As for the speed camera ticket. You don't actually have to pay those. They're not legal and most locals just throw them in the trash lol.

I'm still going to, I mean I kind of deserve it. I also just don't wanna cause any unnecessary tension. I mean I was going 70 in a 55, and they give you a 10 MPH threshold. Not to mention, I don't know what other citations are sent from, but mine was marked from Cedar Rapids PD.

I have been seeing people say that shear may not be adequate for a significant tornado event, and that is just simply not true at all. In the spring and summer, cape can stretch those wind profiles vertically in a dramatic fashion, which could induce a strong tornado threat. Strong cape values+moderate wind shear=strong tornado threat.

There's more , but found this

61.138(f) states that "Failure to Timely Pay or Challenge Automated Traffic Citation. If the recipient of an Automated Traffic Citation does not either pay the fine by the due date stated on the original citation or successfully challenge the citation as provided herein, the City may file a municipal infraction against the Vehicle Owner in accordance with Cedar Rapids Municipal Code §1.12 and §364.22 of the Code of Iowa, seeking judgment for the applicable civil fine provided in subsections 61.138(c) and (d) plus state mandated filing fee and court costs.

Sorry I forgot to warn ya about those. :p The one that usually gets people from Illinois and points east is the one on I-80 in Le Claire just as you cross the river into the state.

Beautiful trough ejection that would certainly lead to some major trouble by the 12z Euro for the 5/18 to 5/20 timeframe. There is incredibly strong ensemble support for this trough between the GFS and Euro as well. Trey discusses it in his recent video on the upcoming threat because it is particularly impressive looking as of now. The moisture return being depicted is also very impressive with it.

How compared to 3/14-16? Is this the out-with-a-bang of the season?

I just don't want to see another 3-14-3-16 style event again for a looong while, perhaps never.

It's very different. 3/14-16 was one of those early-mid spring type giant longwave troughs that traverses practically the whole country very slowly, leading to many days of enhanced severe weather potential. Geometrically, the 3/14-16 trough was actually quite close to the April 1974 and 2011 super outbreak troughs. You tend to not get these super well-defined monster longwaves this late in the season (not impossible though). The troughs normally eject in textbook fashion over the plains this time of the year and aren't capable of digging in super deeply without becoming too meridional for significant severe weather, or they get deflected to the north from a high pressure system that normally sets up in the southeast.

WFO Memphis has confirmed 53 tornadoes in the Mid-South so far in 2025. This is the most on record, surpassing the previous mark of 52 in 2021.
