Hurricane Category 4 Hurricane Helene

It's a mess, that's for sure. I don't know why but media coverage was scant and incomplete during this event. Even the radio stations I could get didn't have many details. Their newspaper (The Citizen Times) had barely OK coverage in the online version but so far has had the most accurate info. I found as much or more on YouTube which is scary considering that those people needed to have accurate info right now to save lives.

I looked on Google and it turns out that I'm 20 miles south of Asheville as the crow flies. I thought it was further! We got hit hard here but not nearly as bad as Asheville. Most of our problems were wind-related but our drainage is better here, being more foothills than mountains. And I can sure believe the 'Thousand year event" status; most of my lifetime has been spent here and I've never in 65 years seen anything like this.
Sadly it's like what happened with Michael. They cover it until it hits and then move on to cover other stuff.

Has anyone heard how the Biltmore mansion and the Appalachian Trail fared during the flooding? I hear parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway are closed in western North Carolina due to storm damage.

The mansion itself was not impacted but I believe the entrance by Biltmore village was severely damaged. I don’t know about other buildings on the property.

I’ve seen photos of some severe damage on the parkway. Landslides taken out section of the road as well as places where blow overs took down much of the surrounding forest. These places will not look the same in our lifetime sadly.

I ran across something on that earlier- if I find it again I'll link here. The gist is a few animals were lost, many barns and sheds were wiped out, roads were mud-covered, and they lost about as many trees as everyone else around there. No word on the botanical gardens but IIRC it's partly walled in and on high ground.

There may have been some minor damage on the mansion but they said nothing significant. It was spared from most of the water, being on a hill but Biltimore Forest at the entrance to the property was heavily flooded. At least a month till they re-open the property for guests.

Such is often the result of floods like this. There are people still unaccounted for and time will find them wherever their fate took them, be it in a car or in a tree or in snags in the rivers. There are also stories like this which warm the heart and give hope:
