I genuinely have no idea how anyone follows/cares about politics anymore. I used to love following politics, but the last six(ish) years have totally killed any hope I had of this country ever returning to any sort of decency. You have liberals who think that retweets and hashtags will save the world on one side and a group of absolutely insane folks like Marjorie Taylor Greene on the other. I honestly don't see how we ever fix it. It has become professional wrestling at this point. Maybe I'm too cynical, but again, I don't see how everyone isn't by now.

Look for the helpers, as Mr. R. once said.

I just found this site; it looks good, but I still have to check it out in depth: Young people interested in talking about serious things, not trying to score points, not trying to win at all costs.

I didn't like it at first because it was different from some things I believe. But then, people are different from me and sometimes I still like them, or don't. That's what a democratic republic is: people, not "Point/Counterpoint" and the politics of total destruction; not a community of one sort or another that is defined only in terms of who and what it excludes and condemns.

The biggest recent strides in social justice, such as they were, came when a generation ruled that had been thrown into barracks, while young, from all walks of life and molded into an army for a very good reason. Forced to get along "or Hitler would win," they talked more with each other after 1945 and they didn't despise hope. (Of course they were just people and messed up later, as every generation does, but still, like some earlier generations, they knew, far better than many Americans do today, what real hate, horror, loss, hunger, and conflict are like and so emphasized the opposite and were a little more openminded.)

You can't get that back, but each historical period has its own strengths.

I like the recollection that linked site (unherd.com) gives me, at least to initial contact with it, of my own youthful openmindedness and optimism in the 1960s. The young can't afford to be cynical -- it's their future at stake. After awhile they grow old and weary (and occasionally wearisome ;) ). They mess up, too.

Same old story, really.

But there are always more young people, and always with minds of their own and a future to somehow gain.

A new Repub candidate for Gov. Impressed that he never evoked the name of Trump in his 4 min trailer. Never mentioned guns or a wall either... did mention progress and seems genuine at first glace. It's early, but so far I'm liking what I'm seeing.

Alternatively they did not block the CMS mandate, instead in a 5-4 decision allowed it to go into effect.

Wow. I've never voted for a Republican, but assuming this guy is as he appears to be, I would vote for him in a heartbeat. How nice to see him acknowledge the real problems in the state and not just spout the same old tired buzzword garbage. This state desperately needs someone like this.

Having said that, I fully expect the majority of this state to go with the worst possible choice imaginable.

I'm not ready for a world where Tim James is governor

I'm sure his new commercials will just be great.

It just makes sense...does it to you?

Didn't realize they were already running, I've seen his commercial about 50 times already today watching the NFL games.

Yeah, I noticed them yesterday as well (mainly the one about the *scary music* 'SECULAR LEFT'). Out of the many, many problems Alabama has, a mass invasion of the SeCuLaR lEfT is not one of them. Lots of dog whistles, but no substance whatsoever.

Lindy Blanchard has a decent commercial - right up to the point where she says the election was stolen from Trump.
well she is Trump's hand picked candidate, so no surprise there.

True, but Guvnah Kay’s commercial says she is “Trump Tough”, whatever that means.
She lost my vote with that commercial, and I thought she has done a good job. I won't vote for candidates who worship Trump as part of their campaign. Republicans need to move on.

SCOTUS in a 6-3 decision blocks the OSHA vaccine mandate.

I'm a little late to this, but it was the right decision even if I have zero problems with private companies or businesses mandating vaccines. OSHA was way out over their skis on this -- in particular, because of how long it took for them to issue the emergency rule.

Welp...never fails. He'll be kissing Trump's ring soon enough. Or MTG's.

“I think that personal responsibility should be the key to attacking this issue, that people do have common sense. If they need to be protected, that they’ve got the good common sense to be protected,” Burdette said.

Asked if he was vaccinated against COVID, Burdette said he is not.

I find it hilarious he harkens to common sense to be protected from COVID then states he's not vaccinated. He's 62 years old.

There's a lot to like about the guy otherwise:

Solid on the 2nd Amendment and Abortion. Says he supports Law Enforcement yet also wants prison reform and to treat addiction and mental illness with more resources. I agree with a lot that is in on his site. The devil is in the details, however.

For example, he states he wants to lower taxes. If that means he's going to exempt medicine, food, and most clothing from sales tax then excellent. Outside of that, and adjusting income tax brackets to be comport with modern earnings, Alabama needs to raise taxes. Alabama is not over-taxed and never has been.

I also think only promoting school choice as the way to solve our issues with K-12 education is just outright fallacious. The AEA stranglehold in Alabama has largely been broken. Our public schools are grossly under-funded except in areas where city level districts have been able to implement higher property taxes. He also mentions breaking larger school districts up. Good luck with that, Lew. Not happening with most of the largest districts because they all operate under decades old federal desegregation consent orders. He can't change that no matter what he does.

My only other issue with the guy is mentioning "Big Tech" under the section covering the 1st Amendment. Big Tech has never violated anyone's 1st Amendment rights. They're not the Federal Government. Attention needs to be given to tech monopolies, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the 1st Amendment. They can ban, label, or suspend anyone they want from their platforms. Doesn't matter I'd it seems to target one particular political group over another. Being Conservative or a Republican isn't a protected class, and Conservatives seriously need to quit whining about right-wing trolls getting banned for nasty behavior online. It's an anathema to Conservative principles to think more government is the answer to media and tech platforms having a liberal political bias.

Didn’t know this until my coworker just went to get his CDL learners permit but due to new requirements all new CDL learners will have to take a federally required course to get their license. Apparently it from what I read it would be from 3-20 days long and cost $3500-9500 a driver. The government just effectively made an issue way worse.

I actually do not disagree with this and I think most CDL drivers were doing this anyway for 18-wheelers. Does this apply to all classes though?
