Significant Tornado Events

Today is the 18th anniversary of the 2007 Greensburg EF5, so I figured I’d share a few more of the things I’ve got from that day.

Here’s an area that was completely devastated south of US-54, multiple homes were completely leveled or swept cleanly away. Contextual damage was extraordinary, debris granulation, total tree debarking, extreme vehicle damage, etc. The home pictured at bottom had significant damage to its concrete block foundation and porch walkway.

Perhaps most impressive, this large brick and masonry constructed church that had been converted to a home was essentially flattened to the ground.

Some stuff from the southern part of town. The first image shows wind-rowing of debris towards the center of the vortex which passed 1/4 mile to the north, made visible by the scouring at the top of the image from right to left.

A home that was essentially wiped out of existence in a residential area of town. Note the low-lying vegetation completely stripped nearby.

I am embarrassed that I used to consider this tornado a “ marginal “ EF5. The contextual damage is easily some of the most violent I have ever seen. Especially the tree damage. In particular, there is one image of tree damage around a lake north of Greensburg and it is honestly some of the most insane tree damage i’ve ever seen.

To be fair, finding photographs of the hardest hit areas is painstakingly difficult. Definitely one of the more poorly documented EF5’s in terms of documenting its most intense damage.

As for the tree damage, yeah the area around the lake is a contender for most extreme tree and vegetation damage ever documented, legitimately.

Here’s also damage to the Greensburg High School, including a before shot for reference. This is up there with some of the most extreme damage to a school/institution building documented.

Surprised so few people talk about 5/4/03. The Girard tornado could honestly be an F5 candidate, although I'd like more evidence and correspondence with more experienced rating debaters like @buckeye05 or @TH2002 to fully side with that.

Could you explain some of the tornadoes present?

Ashby-Dalton to me is the example of why tornado size and strength don't necessarily correlate. For a violently-rotating tornado, it was quite small (one of those "ropes" that people usually associate with photogenic but weak tornadoes). Honestly, I'd be tempted to run into it if I didn't know that I'd get a corn concussion and possibly ripped to shreds.

On Cullman, that January 2025 study headed by Anthony Lyza included it as an "EF5 candidate", along with Pisgah, Tuscaloosa, New Harmony, Ringgold, Chickasha, Goldsby, Shawnee, Washington, Vilonia (2014), Pilger (not sure which one), Fairdale, Bassfield (2020), Mayfield (2021) and Rolling Fork. Not sure whether they'll ever unofficially "upgrade" those in a later study, but an interesting read nonetheless.

a thing no one has really talk about yet about the Plainfield tornado , is that it seems like base on the conditions , it was similar to Elie , and jarrell, who were both hybrid tornadoes (landspout conditions under a mesocyclone)

im pretty sure the May 2 2024 Hawley tornado would also be in this hybrid zone.
Is there a database for browsing the environment of past tornadoes, or did you log all of this data by hand using papers on each of those tornadoes? I can only find the SPC tornado environment database which doesn't seem to have an individual search (and stops after 2011).

I used to think it was only a mid to high-end EF4 but after seeing those pictures years later it certainly was a solid EF5.

Wow, that is a big list. I certainly think there have been at least an additional dozen or two tornadoes since the EF-SCALE was implemented that could have been rated EF5.

For my fellow Piedmont/Calumet/El Reno EF5 junkies; I have uncovered a source of almost every angle of the Cactus 117 Oil Rig. Here's some of the pictures Ive never seen anyone post before. Just immense levels of destruction; smashed, mangled, and unrecognizable machinery.

I also found out this tornado joins the group of tornadoes which shot kitchen utensils into trees!! Unfortunately I cannot find a better photo of this damage. (Last photo seen here)

OTD one year ago, one of the most historic and catastrophic Plains outbreaks in history did not happen.

As an ominous reminder of what could have transpired, a violent tornado struck the town of Barnsdall well after dark:

EDIT: Also OTD 22 years ago the New Grand Chain, IL F4 happened.

Man, I can’t believe this was already a year ago.

While the event as a whole was definitely... not what was expected, two of the craziest tornado videos ever came out of that Barnsdall-Bartlesville tornado.

Also, do you know if any photos exist of the Lake Martin-Dadeville, AL EF4 from 4/27/11? If I'd ask anyone, it'd be you. :)
