On this day in 1531, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Lisbon, Portugal. Leading to 30,000 fatalities and a severe tsunami.

On this day in 1700, a magnitude 9.2 earthquake struck off the coastline of Washington and Oregon. It caused a large tsunami. The damage and fatalities are unknown.

On this day in 1772, Thomas Jefferson and his newly wed wife, Martha Wayles Skelton, had to abandon their carriage due to deep snow. They got home by horseback.

On this day in 1843, a destructive tornado hit a factory in Pottsville, Pennsylvania leading to many fatalities.

On this day in 1940, the airport in Birmingham, Alabama fell to -10 degrees. The Black Warrior River had ice up to 6 inches thick allowing people to skate. In Cheyenne, Wyoming, the temperature was -6. This marked the 10th consecutive day of the daily low temperature being below zero. It still stands as their longest streak ever recorded.

On this day in 1944, a tornado outbreak affected Oklahoma leading to 2 fatalities. It caused 8 significant tornadoes and 2 killer tornadoes.

On this day in 1967, Chicago, Illinois saw 23 inches of snow. Their single heaviest snow on record. Some of the plowed snow was sent to Florida in railroad cars.

On this day in 1974, an F3 tornado hit Randolph County, Alabama leading to 1 fatality.

On this day in 2001, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Gujarat, India. This quake led to 20,023 fatalities.

On this day in 2013, Cyclone Oswald caused 7 tornadoes rated F1 in Queensland, Australia.

On this day in 1982, a major snowstorm caused more than 90% of the roads in both central and eastern South Dakota to be blocked.

On this day in 2004, Tropical Cyclone Elita formed. It would intensify into a 75mph, gusts to 95mph, with a pressure of 970mbar category 1 cyclone on the 29th. It made landfall on Madagascar 3 times. Overall, it caused 33 fatalities.

On this day in 2008, Tropical Cyclone Gene formed. It would intensify into a 115mph, gusts to 135mph, with a pressure of 945mbar category 3 major cyclone on the 31st. It affected Fiji and Vanuatu in the South Pacific. Overall, it caused 8 fatalities and $35million in damages.

On this day in 2015, a strong Nor`easter was impacting the Northeast U.S.

On this day in 1772, George Washington reported 3 feet of snow at Mount Vernon while Thomas Jefferson reported 3 feet of snow at Monticello.
On this day in 1940, Mason, Florida recorded its coldest January temperature ever at 8 degrees. Lafayette, Georgia dropped to -17 degrees. This is Georgia's coldest temperature ever recorded.
On this day in 1942, It was the coldest day in the Netherlands since 1850 as the temperature dropped to -19 degrees.
On this day in 1948, a tropical cyclone affected Reunion Island in the Southwest Indian Ocean. It passed west of Reunion Island with estimated winds up to 187mph. This storm led to 100 fatalities.
On this day in 1967, an F2 tornado hit Felton, Delaware. This was the first tornado in Delaware during the winter months.
On this day in 1989, Tanana, Alaska reported a low of -76 degrees. The maximum daily temperature in the town of Amber, Alaska was -66 degrees, but the wind chill made it feel like -120 degrees. During this cold wave, the barometric pressure at Northway, Alaska rose 31.85 inches (1078.6mbar). This was the highest air pressure ever measured in the U.S.
On this day in 2008, Cut Bank, Montana saw a rapid temperature drop from 40 degrees at 2pm MST Sunday to -14 degrees in just 12 hours.
On this day in 2008, Tropical Cyclone Fame made landfall on Madagascar with winds of 100mph, gusts to 120mph, with a pressure of 972mbars. It caused 13 fatalities and up to $51,000 in damages.
On this day in 2009, a severe ice storm affected northern Arkansas. Causing up to 2.5 inches of ice, 65 fatalities, and $125million in damages. 450,000 customers were without power. 1 co-op had only 12 of 12,000 clients with power. Some remained without power for more than a month.
On this day in 2019, an EF4 tornado with winds estimated at 185mph hit Havana, Cuba causing 8 fatalities. It was the first EF4 in Cuba since 1940.

On this day in 1922, a severe winter storm brought 28 inches of snow to Washington D.C. in 32 hours. It caused the roof of the Knickerbocker Theater to collapse causing 96 fatalities.
On this day in 1935, Washington plunged to -2 degrees after a snowstorm. This would be the last subzero reading until January 1982.
On this day in 1940, amazing photographs caught thick ice on the Mississippi River at Vicksburg, MS.
On this day in 1948, an ice storm from Arkansas to South Carolina caused $20 million in damages and 30 fatalities.

On this day in 1780, One of the coldest times in Washington history was underway as all the waterways of the Middle Atlantic region including the Potomac River and most of the Chesapeake Bay were frozen. New York City dipped to -16 while Hartford, Connecticut dipped to -20. New York Harbor was frozen for 5 weeks allowing a heavy cannon to be taken across the ice to fortify the British at Staten Island.

On this day in 1940, Richmond, Virginia recorded it's lowest temperature ever at -12 degrees.

On this day in 1947, one person was killed when an F4 tornado hit Thayer-Van Buren, Missouri. This tornado tracked up to 45 miles.

On this day in 1966, a blizzard hit Washington D.C. with up to 13.8 inches of snow. The low-pressure system deepened from 995.5mbars down to 975.2mbars in just 12 hours.

On this day in 1984, Tropical Cyclone Domoina made landfall on the coast of Mozambique with winds of 65mph, gusts to 85mph, with a pressure of 976mbars. It caused 242 fatalities and up to $200million in damages.

On this day in 1987, a thunderstorm produced 3 inches of snow in just 45 minutes at Owing Mills, Maryland.

On this day in 2008, Uranium City in Northern Saskatchewan was the coldest spot in North America with a temperature of -74.2 degrees.

On this day in 1607, massive flooding in England destroys 200 miles of coastline and leads to 2,000 fatalities.
On this day in 1936, 11 inches of snow fell in Birmingham, Alabama setting a 24-hour record and establishing the most snowfall from a single storm.
On this day in 1954, a rare tornado occurred in Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
On this day in 1966, all-time cold records were set in both Alabama and Mississippi. New Market, Alabama fell to -27 degrees while Corinth, MS fell to -19 degrees.
On this day in 1969, Eugene, Oregon had 34 inches of snow on the ground.
On this day in 1989, Choteau, Montana saw a wind gust to 124mph.
On this day in 1992, Hurricane Ekeka attained hurricane intensity over the Central Pacific. By February 2nd, it would peak at category 3 intensity with winds of 115mph, gusts to 135mph, with a pressure of lower than 985mbar. It is the most intense off-season tropical cyclone on record in the Northeastern Pacific basin. Only one of three tropical cyclones to occur during the January or February period in the Northeastern Pacific. It is the only hurricane to occur within the Palmyra Atoll Exclusive Economic Zone. There was no damage or loss of life reported.
On this day in 1994, Duluth, Minnesota saw a record low of -35 degrees.
On this day in 2004, Grand Forks, North Dakota records an all-time record low temperature of -44 degrees.
On this day in 2013, a significant severe weather event occurred across the Midwest and Southeast. Starting on January 29th and going through the 30th, it produced 65 tornadoes including 1 EF3. This EF3 hit Adairsville, Georgia with estimated winds to 160mph. This outbreak caused 2 fatalities and $350million in damages. It was the 7th largest winter tornado outbreak and the 4th largest January outbreak. It was also the largest January outbreak in middle Tennessee on record as well as the 2nd largest outbreak there for any calendar month.

On this day in 1906, a violent 8.8 earthquake struck Esmeraldas, Ecuador. It caused a destructive tsunami up to 16 ft and over 1,000 fatalities. The tsunami affected Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico, California, and Japan.
On this day in 1908, a violent long-tracked F4 stayed on the ground for at least 40 miles hitting the city of Martinsville, MS. It led to 8 fatalities.
On this day in 1911, Tamarack, California was without snow for the first 8 days of the month. By the end of the month, though, they were buried under 390 inches of snow. This is a record monthly total for the U.S.
On this day in 1911, Oklahoma City hit 83 degrees. This is their all-time record high temperature for January. Dallas, Texas hit 93 degrees. San Antonio hit 85 and Beaumont-Port Arthur hit 81.
On this day in 1920, Northfield, Vermont saw the highest barometric pressure reading in the lower 48 states at 1054mbar.
On this day in 1934, Mount Washington, New Hampshire hit -47 degrees. This is the all-time lowest temperature on record for New Hampshire.
On this day in 1936, the village of Amenia in North Dakota registered a maximum temperature of only 10 degrees for the entire month of January. This perhaps the lowest monthly maximum temperature ever measured in the lower 48 states.

On this day in 1994, Intense Tropical Cyclone Geralda had hit peak intensity with winds of 165mph, gusts to 185mph, with a pressure of 905mbar. Making landfall on the coast of Madagascar on February 2nd, it led to 231 fatalities and greater than $10million in damages. It is only 1 of just 9 category 5 cyclones in the South-West Indian Ocean since 1950.

On this day in 1814, the Mayon Volcano erupts on the Philippine Island of Luzon leading to 1,200 fatalities.
On this day in 1893, thunder and lightning accompanied sleet and snow in St. Louis, Missouri even though the temperature was just 13 degrees.
On this day in 1899, the U.S. Weather Bureau Hurricane Forecasting Center was moved from Kingston, Jamaica to Havana, Cuba. Observation stations had been established in 1898 throughout the central and eastern Caribbean by President McKinley who reportedly feared hurricanes more than the Spanish Navy in the Spanish American War. In 1902, hurricane forecasting was transferred to Washington, D.C.
On this day in 1920, the barometer in Portland, Maine recorded a pressure of 1053mbar. The highest February sea-level pressure ever recorded in the Eastern U.S.

On this day in 1955, an F3 tornado hit Commerce Landing, MS and Clark, MS. It led to 20 fatalities including 17 people at a plantation school. On this day in 1986, Severe Tropical Cyclone Winifred had winds of 105mph, gusting to 125mph, with a pressure of 957mbar. It led to 3 fatalities and $154million in damages. It was the first cyclone to significantly impact Northeastern Australia in 14 years.
On this day in 1989, Tioga, North Dakota reported a wind chill value of -90. Russell, Kansas which recorded a temperature of 84 the previous day reported a morning low of 12.
On this day in 1991, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Afghanistan and Pakistan. Leading to 1,200 fatalities and $26 million in damages.

On this day in 1955, an F3 tornado hit Commerce Landing, MS and Clark, MS. It led to 20 fatalities including 17 people at a plantation school. It is the 3rd deadliest school tornado disaster in U.S. history. Ironically, a survey team stated that since all debris was thrown in one direction, the event should not be listed as a tornado.

February 2nd Weather History:

On this day in 1947, the lowest temperature recorded on the North American Continent occurred at Snag, Yukon Territory with a reading of -81 degrees.

On this day in 1952, a tropical system developed. It went on to affect Florida and peaked at intensity on the 3rd with peak winds of 70mph, gusts to 90mph, with a pressure of 990mbars. There were no fatalities reported with this storm and damage was minimal. This is the only known Atlantic tropical system recorded in the month of February.

On this day in 1968, Cyclone Georgette dissipated after being active for 24 days in the Southwest Indian Ocean. Peaking at category 3 intensity, it affected Madagascar and Mozambique. It led to 32 fatalities. It is the longest tracked storm in the South-West Indian Ocean basin on record.

On this day in 1976, Caribou, Maine set a new all-time record low pressure of 957mbars and Boston, Massachusetts recorded their 2nd lowest pressure ever at 965mbars.

On this day in 1985, Up to 9 inches of sleet, freezing rain, and snow paralyzed North Alabama.

On this day in 1989, Dawson, Yukon Territory reported the highest sea-level pressure ever recorded in Canada at 1079mbar.

On this day in 1931, A 7.8 earthquake struck Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. Leading to 256 fatalities, it remains the deadliest natural disaster in New Zealand's history.

On this day in 1936, Boston, Massachusetts reported their longest stretch with low temperatures of 10 or lower at noon from January 23rd through February 3rd.

On this day in 1963, The maximum February temperature for the United States was set when Montezuma, Arizona soared to 105 degrees.

On this day in 2010, Severe Tropical Cyclone Oli had winds of 130mph, gusts to 150mph, with a pressure of 925mbar. It impacted the Samoan Islands, Cook Islands, and French Polynesia in the South Pacific. Overall, it led to 1 fatality and $70million in damages.

On this day in 1887, San Francisco experienced it's greatest snowstorm on record with 4 inches.

On this day in 1942, a tornado outbreak produced greater than 28 tornadoes across the Southeast. It led to 22 fatalities.

On this day in 1986, a supercell thunderstorm tracked through Tomball, Texas producing tennis ball size hail and 4 tornadoes. One of the tornadoes was an F3 that led to 2 fatalities and $80million in damages.

On this day in 1996, Greene, Rhode Island saw the coldest temperature ever recorded of -25 degrees.

On this day in 2002, Severe Tropical Cyclone Chris had peak winds at 145mph, gusts to 165mph, with a pressure of 915mbar. It made landfall on the coast of Western Australia causing up to 12 fatalities and $929,000 in damages.

On this day in 2008, a major severe weather/tornado outbreak affected the Mid-South region into the Ohio Valley. Leading to 87 confirmed tornadoes, it caused 57 fatalities and $1.2billion in damages. Known as the Super Tuesday Outbreak, it is the 2nd deadliest outbreak to occur in February. It caused 5 EF-4 tornadoes.

On this day in 1975, up to 27 inches of snow fell in Boston, Massachusetts which led to the Boston Globe not being delivered for the first time in 106 years.
On this day in 2012, a 6.9 earthquake struck the central Philippines leading to 43 fatalities.
On this day in 2018, an 8.0 earthquake struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands leading to 9 fatalities.
On this day in 2018, a 6.0 earthquake struck Taiwan leading to 10 fatalities.
On this day in 2020, Antarctica records a high temperature of 64.9 degrees at Esperanza, Argentina's research station.

On this day in 1780, ice mounds piled up to 20 feet high on the beaches of the Delmarva Peninsula.

On this day in 1812, 8.2 earthquake struck New Madrid, Missouri.

On this day in 1835, Tallahassee dropped to 4 degrees while Pensacola, Florida fell to 8 degrees. The St. Johns River froze and ice was reported on Pensacola Bay.

On this day in 1904, a trio of F2 tornadoes hit south of Louisville, Kentucky causing many houses to be damaged or destroyed.

On this day in 1933, a 112-foot rogue wave hit the USS Ramapo in the Pacific Ocean. It is thought to be the highest wave ever observed. It was caused by 70mph winds over a large fetch. Thankfully, the ship survived.

On this day in 1934, a deep freeze made it possible to drive from Bay Shore to Fire Island, New York.

On this day in 1971, a waterspout came ashore at Gulf Breeze, Florida causing F2 damage to an expensive apartment complex. While 112 people were hurt, there were no known fatalities.

On this day in 2008, the temperature dropped to -72 degrees in Chicken, Alaska. This was the lowest temperature in the state in more than 8 years. Talk about cold chicken! LOL!

On this day in 2009, Intense Tropical Cyclone Gael had max winds of 130mph, gusts to 150mph, with a pressure of 930mbar. While it did not make direct landfall, it caused 2 fatalities and significant property damage on Madagascar.

On this day in 2009, Melbourne, Australia saw their hottest day in 150 years when the temperature rose to 116 degrees.

On this day in 1995, a 6.4 earthquake struck Trujillo, Colombia leading to 64+ fatalities.

On this day in 2020, Severe Tropical Cyclone Damien made landfall on the coast of Western Australia with winds of 110mph, gusts to 130mph, with a pressure of 955mbars. Though no fatalities were reported, it caused greater than $6million in damages.

On this day in 2021, Very Intense Tropical Cyclone Faraji peaked at max intensity of 160mph, gusts to 180mph, with a pressure of 925mbar. Thankfully, it stayed away from land.

On this day in 1870, Ulysses S. Grant signed the measure which created a federal weather agency. It was later assigned to the U.S. Army Signal Corps known today as the National Weather Service. Observations began on November 1st, 1870.
On this day in 1899, Fort Worth, Texas dropped to 8 degrees. Ice flows blocked the Mississippi River at New Orleans, Louisiana. The temperature at Norway House, Manitoba, Canada fell to -63 degrees. This set the province's low temperature record.
On this day in 1933, the state of Wyoming record cold temperature of -63 was recorded in Moran.
On this day in 1934, New York City has their coldest day on record with a temperature of -14.3 degrees.
On this day in 1934, Michigan established the state record low temperature at -51 degrees at Vanderbilt.
On this day in 1960, the temperature soared to 102 degrees in Rio Grande City, Texas. Just two days later, 10 inches of snow fell at Port Arthur.
On this day in 1978, an F3 tornado hit south of Joshua Tree, California. It tracked up to 2 miles and caused over half a million in damages. It's the strongest tornado ever recorded in California.
On this day in 1988, Alliance, Nebraska plunged from 44 degrees to 12 degrees in just 2 hours.
On this day in 1990, a tornado hit Nat, Texas while tennis ball size hail caused up to half a million dollars in damage in Shreveport, Louisiana.
On this day in 1994, a catastrophic ice storm affected North MS back into Louisiana. This ice storm produced up to 6 inches of ice. Nearly 750,000 customers in North MS were without power at one point with some outages lasting up to a month. The ice caused 95 foot tall steel transmission towers with 42 inch concrete bases to collapse. Engineers estimated the lines would have been supporting up to 39 tons (78,000 pounds) of ice! To date, this remains the worse ice storm to affect North MS.
On this day in 2006, Death Valley, California recorded a high temperature of 91 degrees. This is the earliest in the year of a temperature greater than or equal to 90 degree temperature recorded in Death Valley. Records go back to 1911.

On this day in 1899, the all-time state record in Ohio was set as the temperature fell to -39 degrees in Milligan, Ohio.
On this day in 1921, a large F4 tornado hit the town of Gardner, Georgia leading to 31 fatalities.
On this day in 1933, the all-time state record in Oregon was set as the temperature fell to -54 degrees in Seneca, Oregon.
On this day in 1959, a large F4 tornado hit St. Louis, Missouri leading to 21 fatalities and over 2,000 buildings damaged/destroyed.
On this day in 1973, a major snowstorm affected the Southeast producing 18 inches in Georgia and up to 2 feet of snow in South Carolina.
On this day in 1978, a significant storm system caused widespread flooding and mudslides in Southern California. Causing $50 million in damages, it is one of the most destructive on record.
On this day in 1990, a severe weather outbreak produced 29 tornadoes across the Southeast U.S. in 29 hours along with 245 large hail/damaging wind reports. A tornado hit Austell, Georgia causing up to $2 million in damages.

On this day in 2011, Bartlesville, Oklahoma hit -27 degrees. It was colder than the South Pole and most stations in Antarctica.
On this day in 2013, a severe weather outbreak occurred across the Gulf States. This outbreak produced 8 tornadoes of which one was rated EF4. This EF4 tornado hit Hattiesburg, MS with estimated winds up to 170mph. Thankfully, no fatalities occurred, but it did cause $38.525 million in damages.
On this day in 2015, Super Typhoon Higos reached peak intensity of 150mph, gusts to 170mph, with a pressure of 940mbars. It stayed over open water causing no damage or fatalities.

On this day in 1932, Richmond International Airport recorded a high temperature of 83 degrees.

On this day in 1935, Africa's lowest temperature occurred when the temperature dropped to -11 degrees in llfrane, Morocco.

On this day in 1950, a deadly tornado outbreak occurred from Texas into the Southeast. An estimated 26 tornadoes occurred with an F4 occurring across southern Shreveport area.
