On this day in 1899, Tallahassee, Florida fell to -2 degrees. The coldest ever in the state of Florida. A trace of snow was reported in Fort Myers, Florida. Minden, Louisiana fell to -16 degrees. The coldest ever in the state of Louisiana. Ice was 2 inches thick on the MS River at New Orleans.
On this day in 1952, a tornado outbreak occurred across the Southeast producing 15 confirmed tornadoes including one F4. This F4 tornado hit Marble Hill-Beech Hill-Marble Plains-Decherd, Tennessee. It led to 3 fatalities and $500,000 in damages. Overall, the outbreak led to 5 fatalities and $6.402million in damages.
On this day in 1994, a F0 tornado hit Kamper's West Park near Warrenton, Oregon. No fatalities occurred.
On this day in 2000, a tornado outbreak occurred across Georgia and the Southeast region. It led to 17 confirmed tornadoes with 2 F3 tornadoes. Both of these F3 tornadoes affected the towns of Camilla and Meigs, Georgia. It led to 18 fatalities and greater than $20 million in damages overall.
On this day in 2010, 49 out of the 50 states had snow on the ground. Hawaii was the only state that didn't have snow.
On this day in 2012, Intense Tropical Cyclone Giovanna had winds of 140mph, gusts to 160mph, with a pressure of 935mbar. It affected Madagascar leading to 35 fatalities.

On this day in 1895, one of the Deep South's greatest snowstorms took place. Rayne, Louisiana saw up to 24 inches of snow, Galveston, Texas saw 15 inches, and New Orleans, Louisiana saw 8.2 inches.
On this day in 1908, an early morning F3 tornado hit Tyler, Texas leading to 4 fatalities.
On this day in 1947, The Weather Bureau commissioned its first weather radar at Washington, D.C.
On this day in 1956, a large tornado outbreak affected the Southeast region. It caused an estimated 16 tornadoes along with 2 fatalities.
On this day in 2004, Dallas, Texas saw 3 inches of snow with caused travel chaos.
On this day in 2007, a paraglider survived temperatures near -50 degrees when sucked up by a thunderstorm updraft greater than 30,000 feet above New South Wales. The person passed out for greater than 30 minutes due to the cold and lack of oxygen.
On this day in 2011, Cyclone Bingiza had winds of 115mph, gusts to 135mph, with a pressure of 957mbars. It affected Madagascar leading to 34 fatalities.

On this day in 1987, tornadoes affected Louisiana and Mississippi. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 100mph leading to 1 fatality south of Sulphur, Louisiana.

On this day in 2004, 11 inches of snow fell south of Nashville, Tennessee.

On this day in 2005, Severe Tropical Cyclone Nancy had winds of 145mph, gusts to 165mph, with a pressure of 935mbar over the South Pacific. Though no fatalities occurred, it affected the Cook Islands and American Samoa.

On this day in 2017, Cyclone Dineo had winds of 100mph, gusts to 120mph, with a pressure of 955mbars. It caused 280 fatalities and $217 million in damages across South Africa particularly Mozambique.

On this day in 2021, A strong EF3 tornado hit near Sunset Beach, North Carolina leading to 3 fatalities.

On this day in 1855, Emperor Napoleon of France ordered a telegraphic network of weather observers for the purpose of providing storm warnings. The following year, stations would stretch across France and all of Europe. This came to be following the disastrous Black Sea storm during the Crimean War in November 1854.
On this day in 1959, a blizzard paralyzed Newfoundland, Canada with drifts as high as 16.7 feet. 6 fatalities occurred and 70,000 people were without power.
On this day in 1990, a tornado hit Carrollton, Georgia. This outbreak of severe storms also produced baseball size hail in Jackson, MS.
On this day in 1995, an early morning F3 tornado hit Joppa-Arab, Alabama causing 6 fatalities.
On this day in 2005, Severe Tropical Cyclone Olaf had winds of 165mph, gusts to 185mph, with a pressure of 915mbar in the South Pacific. It led to 2 fatalities and up to $10million in damages. It affected Samoa, American Samoa, and the Cook Islands.

On this day in 1938, a violent F4 tornado hit Rodessa, Louisiana leading to 21 fatalities.
On this day in 1959, 1st weather satellite, Vanguard 2, launched.
On this day in 1962, Asheville, North Carolina recorded a temperature of -23 degrees. The coldest reading ever in North Carolina outside of the mountains.
On this day in 1987, parts of south-central Kentucky were without electricity for 3 days due to a significant ice event. It was the worse ice event for the area in 35 years.
On this day in 2008, Intense Tropical Cyclone Ivan had max winds of 145mph, gusts to 165mph, with a pressure of 930mbar. It made landfall on Madagascar leading to 93 fatalities and $30 million in damages.

On this day in 1959, a single storm produced 189 inches of snow over a 5-day period in California. This is the highest snowfall total ever from a single storm system in North America.
On this day in 1979, the temperature at Old Forge, New York plunged to -52 degrees establishing a state record.
On this day in 1992, a thunderstorm spawned a strong F4 tornado in Van Wert County, Ohio.
On this day in 1996, Cuba experienced it's coldest morning on record as Bainoa dropped to 33 degrees.
On this day in 2002, Intense Tropical Cyclone Guillaume had win ds of 125mph, gusts to 145mph, with a pressure of 920mbar. It brought affects to Madagascar as a weakening tropical system.
On this day in 2008, a EF2 tornado hit Hookerton, North Carolina shifting a house off its foundation. Thankfully, there were no fatalities.

On this day in 1871, Professor Cleveland Abbe of the Signal Corps Service issued the first weather synopsis and forecasts along with warnings to mariners for the Great Lakes.

On this day in 1884, one of the largest and most widespread tornado outbreaks in American history occurred over the Southeastern U.S. It was known as the Enigma Outbreak due to the unknown number of total tornadoes. It is estimated that around 37 tornadoes occurred, but there were probably more. It led to greater than 178 fatalities and up to an estimated $4 million in damages. An estimated 24 tornado were rated F2, 9 F3, and 4 rated F4.

On this day in 1888, a tornado struck Mount Vernon, Illinois resulting in 16 fatalities along a path of 62 miles.

On this day in 2015, Cyclone Marcia had winds of 145mph, gusts to 165mph, with a pressure of 930mbar. It made landfall on the coast of Queensland, Australia. It caused no fatalities but up to $587million in damages.

On this day in 1835, a strong earthquake destroyed Concepcion, Chile. This resulted in 4,000 fatalities.
On this day in 1912, an F3 tornado hit Shreveport, Louisiana leading to 9 fatalities.
On this day in 1918, 31.93 inches of rain fell in 24 hours at Honomu, Hawaii.
On this day in 1937, an F3 tornado tracked up to 32 miles from Ozark, Missouri to Marshfield, Missouri. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported.
On this day in 1989, thunderstorms produced 90mph winds in Vicksburg, MS and 100mph winds in Jackson, MS.
On this day in 1995, the temperature at the Civic Center in Los Angeles, California soared to 95 degrees. The highest temperature ever recorded in the city in February.
On this day in 2016, Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston had winds of 180mph, gusts to 200mph, with a pressure of 884mbar in the South Pacific. It affected Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, Niue, and Queensland. It is the only known category 5 cyclone to hit Fiji and the most intense tropical cyclone by pressure in the South Pacific.

On this day in 1493, Christopher Columbus encountered 1 of 2 non-tropical type storms near the Azores.

On this day in 1922, the most destructive ice storm in Midwest history blanketed everything in 4 inches of ice. It caused $1million in damages and 1 fatality.

On this day in 1936, Langdon, North Dakota got above zero degrees for the first time in 6 weeks. Readings, North Dakota never got above freezing during all three winter months.

On this day in 1971, a major tornado outbreak, known as the Mississippi Delta Outbreak, caused greater than 19 tornadoes, 2 of which were rated F4 and one F5. It led to 123 fatalities and $45.9million in damages. The F5 tornado tracked up to 102 miles from Crowville, Louisiana into Issaquena County, MS. It led to 47 fatalities. It is the only F5 tornado in Louisiana and the only F5 to occur in February. A F4 tornado tracked up to 159 miles from Fitler, MS into Middleton, TN. It led to 58 fatalities.

On this day in 1971, Elk City, Oklahoma saw up to 36 inches of snow. This set a 24-hour snowfall record for the state. Residents in some areas were forced to use their 2nd floor windows to get in and out of their houses because of the enormous drifts.

On this day in 1996, all-time record high temperatures for February were set in South Texas. Del Rio hit 103, San Antonio hit 100, Austin hit 99, College Station hit 99, and Waco hit 96.

February 22nd Weather History:

On this day in 1998, a tornado outbreak affected Florida. It is the deadliest tornado event in Florida history with a total of 15 confirmed tornadoes including a total of 3 strong F3 rated. It led to 42 fatalities and up to $107.304 million in damages. One tornado tracked up to 42 miles.

On this day in 2000, Intense Tropical Cyclone Leon-Eline had winds of 130mph, gusts to 150mph, with a pressure of 930mbar. Having tracked for 6,800 miles and lasting for 4 weeks, it made landfall on Madagascar then Mozambique on the 22nd.

On this day in 2007, Intense Tropical Cyclone Favio had winds of 140mph, gusts to 160mph, with a pressure of 925mbar. It was the first known tropical cyclone to pass south of Madagascar to hit south Africa as an intense tropical cyclone. It caused 10 fatalities and $71 million in damages.

On this day in 1975, an F4 tornado hit a Holiday Inn in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
On this day in 1997, a very unusual thunderstorm squall hit Kodiak Airport in Alaska. A C-130 Aircraft was struck by 2 lightning strikes.
On this day in 1998, Otis, Oregon records it's 79th consecutive day of rain. The streak began on December 7th, 1997. It is the longest streak in U.S. history.
On this day in 1999, Mount Baker Ski Area in Washington State set the all-time U.S. snow season record of 1,140 inches of snow. For the 1st time in 33 years, the ski area was closed because of too much snow.
On this day in 2019, Super Typhoon Wutip had winds of 165mph, gusts to 185mph, with a pressure of 920mbar. It led to $3.3 million in damages in Guam, but no fatalities. It is the only known category 5 typhoon in the month of February and the only category 5 equivalent storm recorded in February in the Northern Hemisphere.

On this day in 1910, Washington State's greatest snowstorm dumped 129 inches of snow on Laconia, Washington over 3 days.

On this day in 1956, a severe weather outbreak led to 23 tornadoes including an F4 that hit the St. Louis metro and another F2 tornado that hit the Cincinnati metro. It caused 6 fatalities.

On this day in 1970, Typhoon Nancy affected the Philippines. It reached max intensity of 140mph, gusts to 160mph, with a pressure of 950mbar. While there were no fatalities, it caused nearly $1million in damages.

On this day in 1994, record Cascade snowstorm in Washington State leads to 65 inches of snow in 24 hours at Crystal Mountain. This is a state record.

On this day in 1995, Severe Tropical Cyclone Bobby had winds of 125mph, gusts to 145mph, with a pressure of 925mbar. It affected Western Australia causing 8 fatalities and up to $8.5 million in damages.

On this day in 2000, a late evening F3 tornado cut a 23-mile path through Pontotoc County, MS leading to 7 fatalities. Nearly 300 homes were damaged or destroyed.

On this day in 2001, a F3 tornado hit Greenwood, MS. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported.

On this day in 2016, a vigorous tornado outbreak continued from Florida up to Virginia. This 2-day outbreak started on February 23rd and produced an EF3 tornado in Pensacola, Florida. In total, 61 tornadoes were confirmed along with 4 rated EF3. It led to 7 fatalities and up to $1.2 billion in damages.

On this day in 1934, a tornado outbreak produced a total of 19 tornadoes across Mississippi into Georgia.

On this day in 1992, a record snowstorm produced snow drifts up to 16 feet in Lebanon and 6 feet in parts of Jordan. Northwest Saudi Arabia saw up to 12 inches of snow.

On this day in 2007, Intense Tropical Cyclone Gamede had winds of 120mph, gusts to 140mph, with a pressure of 935mbars. It caused 4 fatalities and up to $120 million in damages. It affected the Mascarene Islands. It led to the 2nd highest recorded rainfall worldwide at 217 inches at the Commerson Crater in a 9-day period on Reunion Island.

On this day in 2017, 2 EF1 tornadoes touched down in Massachusetts. While no fatalities occurred, it caused up to $650,000 in damages. These tornadoes are the only known to occur in February in New England's history.

On this day in 1902, a tornado hit Portland, Oregon. It led to $5,000 in damages. It is only one of 5 tornadoes to go through Portland.
On this day in 1910, Laconia, Washington saw up to 129 inches of snow between the 24th to 26th. This is a state record from a single storm.
On this day in 2004, Severe Tropical Cyclone Ivy had winds of 120mph, gusts to 140mph, with a pressure of 935mbars. It led to 4 fatalities and up to $3.8 million in damages. Affected the South Pacific islands of Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, and New Zealand.
On this day in 2013, Severe Tropical Cyclone Rusty had winds of 115mph, gusts to 135mph, with a pressure of 944mbar. While it did not cause fatalities, it led to $510 million in damages in Western and South Australia.

On this day in 1962, Big Bear Lake, California recorded their lowest temperature on record for February at -10 degrees.

On this day in 1964, Thompson Pass, Alaska finishes the month with 346.1 inches of snow. This is the monthly snowfall record for the state of Alaska.

On this day in 1964, the world's 12-hour rainfall record was set as 52.76 inches fell at Belouve, on La Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. The world record for heaviest 9-hour and 18.5-hour rainfall were also set with 42.79 inches and 66.49 inches.

On this day in 1987, a powerful tornado hit Moselle, MS and near Laurel, MS. It led to 6 fatalities and up to $28.5 million in damages. It tracked up to 40 miles.

On this day in 2007, a multi-day severe weather outbreak affected the Deep South from February 28th through March 1st. 56 tornadoes were confirmed with 3 tornadoes rated EF3 and 3 tornadoes rated EF4. It caused 20 fatalities and greater than $580million in damages. One of these tornadoes rated EF4 with estimated winds up to 170mph destroyed Enterprise, Alabama. Tragically, there were 9 fatalities including 8 of those being students at Enterprise High School.

The other 175mph EF4 that day was the Crittenden, Kentucky tornado.
