Right?! LOL!On this day in 2011, an EF3 tornado touched down in Attala County, Mississippi at approximately 12:02am CST. This makes it the earliest tornado on record in any calendar year.
Maybe we should have been suspicious?
5 January Weather History |
The tornado in Liberty had a very short path as if it was targeting only the school parking lot where it stacked two cars onto two other cars, making the headline pic on the Greenville News newspaper. There's a discrepancy between this F0 rating and the past climate data which has it as an F1 which IIRC was what the newspaper reported. Here's the info from the tornado section of Past Climate Data from the NWS GSP office: F1 TORNADO 1424 LT 2007-01-05 Counties: PICKENS-SC From 1 SE LIBERTY (SC) To 1 SE LIBERTY (SC) Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 15 Path Length: 0.1 Miles Width: 20 Yards |

On this day in 1971, the temperature at Hawley Lake, Arizona plunged to -40 degrees establishing a state record.
On this day in 1973, a major ice storm crippled Atlanta, Georgia with 4 inches of freezing rain. Up to 300,000 people were without power for a week.
On this day in 1988, a winter storm produced 27 inches of snow in the Bad Creek area of South Carolina.
On this day in 1989, a F4 tornado hit Allendale, Illinois causing more than $5million in damages.
On this day in 1990, winds gusted to 130mph on Rattlesnake Ridge in Washington State.

On this day in 2008, a multiple day severe weather/tornado outbreak affected the central and southern U.S. Leading to 72 confirmed tornadoes, it caused 4 fatalities and up to $88 million in damages. The outbreak produced 8 EF-3 tornadoes. 4 on January 7th across Illinois and Missouri. 4 on January 10th across Mississippi and Alabama including one that hit Caledonia, MS. It produced the first January tornadoes in Wisconsin since 1967.
This is particularly interesting because not only does the Kenosha EF1 add to Wisconsin's "snow tornado" list, but the same supercell produced an EF3 tornado beforehand. Two of Wisconsin's three January tornadoes on record occurred on this date (the other being an F3 in January 1967).On this day in 2008, a multiple day severe weather/tornado outbreak affected the central and southern U.S. Leading to 72 confirmed tornadoes, it caused 4 fatalities and up to $88 million in damages.
