Can't believe we are coming up on the 20th anniversary of that day. The ironic thing is that the best-known storm from that outbreak, the infamous "Six-State Supercell," didn't even produce the official strongest (the lone F4) or deadliest (F3, four fatalities) tornadoes of the outbreak. Both of those were (near as I can figure out) part of the same family, from a storm that tracked to the north of the Six-State, through Monroe County, MO.

That outbreak is otherwise fairly obscure despite how prolific it was. There's not much video from it, as nearly all of the significant tornadoes were well after dark, and it was in an era when relatively few people chased at night. Most chasers jumped on the storms when they initiated in northeast Oklahoma and eastern Kansas, hoping they would produce in daylight and before racing off into Missouri, but that just didn't happen.

Skip Talbot was on the Six-Stater when it produced the F2s that impacted Springfield, IL, and glimpsed one of the tornadoes in the darkness, but got no imagery.

Just posting to say that the Tri-State Tornado now seems to have likely peaked at a width of just over 2 miles in rural Hamilton County. In this area specifically.

Correct me if I am wrong somebody, but this would make it wider than any documented EF5/F5 excluding Seneca 1896. Also tornadoes like Funing that were likely EF5 intensity. The green parts are light, blue non damage, yellow severe, red total, black stars are locations with deaths though it seems i missed adding one to Warner D Mick's place where one was killed. Anyways, three were killed in this area.

I'm suspect of Funing's actual width; there's an unusually large swath of EF0 damage which makes it iffy to me (ie, where the straight-line damage started and tornadic damage ended). Very similar to Rio Bonito; that one was exaggerated by about 0.7 miles by SIMEPAR.

Yeah I just said Funning cause that is what it is considered by also agree.

I’m a bit iffy on Seneca’s width, but I believe it’d be tied with Greensburg at just over 2 miles for *official* F/EF5 tornadoes. Using ground and aerial imagery I found a continuous area of damage just a tick over 2 miles in width. Remarkable research though, really impressive all the things you’ve uncovered with that event. The width of that thing would explain why so many people had no idea what they were seeing barreling toward them.

*late edit* Woodward ‘47 I believe was also 2 miles wide IIRC.

Its interesting because in Hamilton County I wrote about the stories here a lot in the article and most people did see the tornado. But it was too large, too strong, and too fast. And perhaps crucially, most had no where to go or shelter. It is remarkable though that it did not kill a lot of people when it peaked in width, it killed two at the Parkers Prairie School, and one at Warner D Mick's place. But as it got smaller (in Crook TWP), it killed a lot of people.

If you checked other people for posting videos here I would have gladly followed what you said to do. But since you didn't that's on you.

lol wut... there was zero malice in his comment towards you... it seems to me like you have some pent-up anger directed towards buckeye that you were waiting for the "right moment" to project.

I'm not here to debate where tornado videos should be posted, but I CAN say with certainty that this doesn't belong here.

What a way to try and turn nothing into a huge blowup.

edit 2: And to add... I'm not 'sticking up' for anyone... just pointing out what many of us are probably thinking.

Because of that I will leave to prevent anymore negativity in here. Been following this thread for quite awhile and wanted to join but I'm not sure it was the right decision in hindsight so that is my fault. Saying sorry is cheap and doesn't do anything so I'll just say that I regret lashing out at buckeye or anyone else on here or anywhere else

I have a bad temper and it's only after I calm down sometimes that I realize that I caused someone hurt or pain. I know that these are just words on a computer screen for you but I mean it.

Uhhh... I doubt you caused anyone hurt or pain. This is a public forum, not a 3rd grade classroom.

Tempers flare every now and then. It's inevitable. And unless the mods go full Gestapo or Stasi, it will continue to happen on this forum, whether you leave or not.

Just sayin'.
 
Was looking through NukeWorker.com's facility image index and when looking at the Calvert Cliffs gallery for something completely unrelated I found these images of La Plata:

Appears to have had an undocumented satellite or second tornado that I've seen virtually zero discussion about.

The 1928 greensburg F2 "Plowed" 6 Foot deep trenches while moving extremely slowly. A farmer noted they were "Deep enough to bury a horse"

Tri-State likely took on the appearance of Bassfield or Moshannon State Forest at this point in its life; likely looking more like a cloud than a tornado.
