Severe WX Severe Weather Threat Jan 12th, 2023

Thankfully no fatalities during the Monroe County Storm Thursday morning. Apparently no tornado warning was issued until AFTER the tornado was already down.

Thursday had a total of 3 Tornado Emergencies issued by NWS Birmingham. It was the first January Tornado Emergencies issued since 2017 and the most in one day for January since 2012.

From some of the pictures I’ve seen on Facebook, most of the damage so far I’ve seen in Coosa county is ~EF1. I don’t know exact location though as the signature was much stronger over southern Coosa. That is a ~25 minute trip for me so it may warrant a drive down where the radar showed the best velocity and the 60+ dbZ debris ball.

I have a question. Why didn’t they issue a tornado emergency for Selma? Or did I miss it?

Great question but one I don't have a clear answer for. They did issue a Tornado Warning with confirmation of the tornado but not a TOR Emergency.

To those who are actually listening and not just hearing, "confirmed tornado" is enough to act on, and if it's weak or small tornado one could question whether it's really an emergency or not since few of the warned people will be much affected by it.

I think it was handled correctly here. Extreme words need to be reserved for extreme events only or they will lose the impact of their meaning when they're truly necessary.

Here's the Tornado Emergency (Dark Purple) that was issued when Selma was fixing to get hit.

There were more long tracked tornadoes in this January 12th than November 4th-5th, November 29th-30th, December 12th-15th, and January 2nd tornadoes combined. I consider a long tracked tornado to be 20+ miles. 2 on November 4th, 1 on November 30th, 1 on December 14th, 1 on January 2nd, and 8 on January 12th.

So Marbury now the longest path in January since 1975 nationwide and we know many of those insanely long tracker 50 or 60 years ago were probably family.
It thrown mobile home frame 250 yards and completely mangled.
