Severe WX Severe Threat 17-18 March 2021

Just had one of those near here, likely over the Arsenal. I'm south of 565 just west of the western Arsenal boundary (Edgewater).
yep. Heard it here, too. Pretty sure it struck very close to here but no doubt you heard it in Edgewater.

I’m still trying to understand all of this. I read and google as much as I can. What areas are you guys expecting to be hit?

Anyone inside the SPC highlighted area should be prepared. It's not areas, it's a large area. Attempting to narrow it down to specific smaller areas is dangerous and ill-advised. That is more of a nowcasting thing.

Too early to pinpoint specific town/cities, even counties. Basically all of the South is under the gun with the highest risk over Mississippi and Alabama as per SPC. Just a gut feeling after looking at everything, but I suspect the central to north-central border region of those two states will be a hot spot today. Basically the area around the KGWX radar, as it was also a hot spot on that one day almost 10 years ago that shall not be named.

Just a note - if you have satellite television like I do, or if your cable goes out, you can stream The Weather Channel on Roku or other streaming devices, and local stations should be streaming as well when they go to full on-air weather coverage. You can also pick up local TV stations over the air using a simple antenna. Heavy rain may cause some dropouts though.

Back to drizzly here in Jasper, still overcast. Sure would be nice if that holds but satellite shows otherwise. This is baaaad.

The HRRR just looks flat out disturbing and scary

14Z run has a nasty sup riding the Walker/Jefferson line by as early as 19Z (2 PM). By the way, it's because of 4/27 and James Spann's long-form coverage of it being on YouTube that I know Alabama counties (at least those in/near the Birmingham television market) on sight almost as well as those in my native Wisconsin.

Have cumulus and showers popping up in the warm sector across MS, it would be nice if the cap could go early and flood the warm sector with junk but at this point I'm not sure how much that would even matter.

I wish Hulu and YouTube TV had the weather channel.

I'm in Hoover right now, close to I-65 and the skies are still overcast. Any idea when we're supposed to see the sun start breaking through?

Could someone post a sounding of an atmosphere with a cap and one without a cap, and point out how to read it? I understand how caps work but am not 100% sure I know how to read a sounding to determine a cap is in place.

I am not going to post a list of shelters in this thread. However I will post a link to where you can find a list of shelters that we have created here on TW. If you would like you are welcome to update the thread with any known shelters that are not already listed. Make sure you post the state along with the location.

The Google Doc in that thread should be editable for anyone who wants to add or edit to it. The ones in the Doc may not have been verified since the last postings last April when the pandemic was in a different place, but it would be a good idea to call shelter locations if a number is provided to double check requirements in light of the pandemic and to see if they are open.
