Temperature is a yo-yo in Jasper. Low of 37.8 up to 39.4. No snow and the rain has stopped for now. 1.99 for yesterday and today so far. All rain. I guess we were too far away from the center of the CCL.

Report from Maggie Valley, NC, near Cataloochee Ski Area, in a cabin at 4,000 ft. There were flurries off and on Saturday afternoon and evening, but the real snow didn't start until after midnight. Woke this morning to approx 5 inches of powdery snow and more is falling during the day. Sitting at 26 degrees at noon.

Precip is changing from rain to sleet/snow mix here in Blount County. Temperatures are above freezing, though. So far, it's just been a good day to sit in front of the fire.

So what's causing the donut hole over the Bham area? Still way too warm here for anything worthwhile.
Well this system was/is a bit complex and as it wrapped up with its circulation, the Bham area and pretty much I-20 in Central AL was the last holdout as we had the area of the low that was ingesting warmer air into the atmosphere and thus as we got precipitation, it wasn’t cooling the column we needed to maintain frozen precip and get the dynamic cooling needed with the heavier precip. Just positioned poorly basically whereas other spots got the cooling effect from the colder air being transported in by the route of the upper level circulation.

It’s like when a hurricane has different quadrant winds due to the circulation. Bummer for us though.

There was an inverted surface trough over Alabama with warm air drawn northward as low pressure developed. Eventually the surface trough became an occluded front as the entire system became vertically stacked/closed off. The warmer air was preserved near the occluded front as minimal cold advection occurred where winds were much lighter. Cold air was drawn around to the south side of the low as part of the occlusion process.

I think that we've now set a precedent for all winter weather threats from here on out. From now on, strange atmospheric conditions will always place themselves over Bham & a 30 mi radius while everyone around us gets snow but we just get a cold rain.

We’ve actually had a few snow shield deployments on the past. Had a Rob Smith Snow Shield that covered Columbus, MS for years and it spilled over to the East as well. Looks like that one activated for this storm too.

The precip transitioned to snow after 9am and there’s a dusting in spotty areas from northern Chambers county to the Wedowee area.

Still a cold rain here in Madison just west of Huntsville. How much snow has Nashville/Middle Tennessee gotten from this system so far?

Snow has ended in Ooltewah, TN. Changeover was at 10:30 this morning eastern time. Stayed snow the entire time. Heavy snow the first 3 or 4 hours. Never really was able to stick until the temps dropped. Temp was 37° when snow started and finally fell to 33° before exiting the area. We had a lot of wasted snow and melting. Finished with right at 1 1/2" on the grass and over 2" on cars. Wish we would have been at 31° and we could have seen 3-4". Happy considering the Chattanooga area is hard to get snow. Speaking of Chattanooga, a lot of areas in town stayed rain all day. We were snow all day and just 5 miles down the road they stayed rain all day. Waiting patiently to see if the late week system might get going and bring us the goods, especially with cold air in place.

The pics don't show a lot of snow, it shows how desperate we are to get another good one around here.
