January 23-25th Winter Wx

Absolutely. Likely, in fact - looks like a line of all snow will get dragged over most areas where there was ice as the storm passes and cold air floods in from the west.
The ice & snow combo really stinks. Could make physical load on power lines worse, and make overhangs more hazardous by way of heavy snowslides off of roofs, trees, etc. Regardless of the ultimate solution, I think, like you said, many of us are in for a very serious winter storm, one way or another. Make sure you have ways to stay warm - generator, blankets and heating implements are all good options. Also think of elderly or disabled neighbors, make sure they have resources and a way to get in touch. Don't underestimate the cold - snow is beautiful but the cold is deadly dangerous.
I'd love to see more snow than freezing rain and hoping that's some sort of trend but if we get significant ice then significant snow on top of that, that might make the ice loads worse and insulate the ice to keep it around longer lol. Not to mention, if snow becomes the trend, Tuesday night is gonna be an interesting one in regard to lows
Saw this just as I posted. This. And agree, the sustained cold is another worrying factor.

Just a FYI: My husband went to the grocery store at lunch and the customer panic hasn’t set in; likely a lot of people haven’t seen the forecast yet. If you’re going to get supplies/gas, do it today and don’t wait around!

I spoke to a cashier at Walgreens and a clerk at the post office about it this morning. Neither one of them had a clue.

Yeah, tomorrow afternoon is really the only day I'll be able to do a shopping run this week, but if you can, please do it now or as soon as possible! It helps you and it lessens the load for other folks who will be shopping later. I'm guessing once the watches and advisories start getting issued, people will start milking-and-egging as usual.

Lots of people are gonna be caught unaware, sounds like; spending today preparing best I can, might need to stock up on gas for the generator, battery banks, small heaters, etc before everyone does realize what's coming

We are just north of you in Hazel Green. If I were going to get a generator, I would do so before close of business today.

If this forecast verifies, and with all of the above-ground utilities and trees falling due to ice around Huntsville and Madison County; power may be out for several days, or longer.
Good advice. I'm just south of you and intentionally used my lunch hour to run to Publix and grab some things before the after work crowd cleans it out. It was already busy and I expect after work hours will be hectic. They still had plenty of bread but I expect it to be empty by closing time tonight. Anything winter related in stores will be gone by tonight or tomorrow. You stand a better chance to find high dollar items ,such as generators, but these will be gone also.

Nws bham afternoon discussion

Friday through Monday.

So the 00z runs were pretty consistent with the timing, location,
amounts and the extent of the warm nose through the period. The
12z run of the GFS is still similar to the overall start time,
but is trending a touch to the south and even lasting about 12
hours. This solution would provide an accumulation of snowfall on
top of the ice accumulation that could make travel even more of
issue through Monday. This is the first solution showing this so
will stick with the consistency for now with the previous runs,
but something to certainly keep an eye on.

Ultimately confidence continues to remain high that this will be
an impactful event for the I-20 corridor and north, with exact
details to be ironed out over the next few days. Portions of the
northwest may not get above freezing until late Monday afternoon
once they go below on Friday. Behind the winter weather we will
also likely need cold weather advisories as temperatures plummet
Monday and Tuesday mornings. Go ahead and make plans now for this
winter impact over the weekend. Expect winter headlines to begin
within the next 12 to 24 hours.

I've assembled some things I've had jotted down for family members from some time ago. There's plenty of guidance for preparing for winter storms and power outages out there but sometimes it doesn't get at the practical realities of people in real situations, and is often too vague. Below is some basic info on readying your pantry/home for this weekend.

1. Food Safety and Basic Preparation
A fridge provides about 4 hours' safety (unopened), while a freezer provides 24 to 48 hours' safety (unopened). Purchase fridge thermometers if you want to track your fridge's internal temperature. Food outside is generally okay if the ambient temperature is at or below your normal fridge's temperature, usually around 40 degrees F. Fill up gas tanks if you're able. Charge your power banks before the storm. Please use generators outside and away from windows. Make sure you have multiple ways of contacting others and/or emergency services. If you have neighbors, make sure those with chronic illnesses or those who are elderly have arrangements for safety in case of a power outage and prolonged cold.

2. Foodstuffs
Have some good non-refrigerated food options at hand, take your pick based on what you like, and what is palatable to you and your family. Below are just a few options that I personally like to have when I'm able to.
-Crackers and shelf-stable breads
-Peanut butter
-Shelf-stable cheeses and meats like salami
-Nuts, trail mix
-Shelf-stable milk
-Canned soups
-Canned fruits
-Canned meats
-Canned beans
-Canned corn
-Canned veggies like green beans
-Salad dressings
-Dry goods like pasta, ready rice, instant oats
(Note: make sure you have a way to boil water without power if you plan on using dry goods)

3. Additional tips
If you're shopping before a storm, buy things that are shelf stable, not milk and eggs. Eat cold things first, as they perish the quickest, starting with your refrigerated goods. You can fill a cooler with ice/snow to keep some things cold. Don't forget your pets. Make sure their food and medicines are taken care of. As far as keeping warm goes, you have a number of options. Bundling up and using blankets are a basic but effective means of conserving body heat, but they shouldn't be solely relied on. Have a way of actually producing heat if you can, whether it's hand-warmers (there's the good old-fashioned ferrous oxide ones, as well as electric ones that have become popular), a space heater, or even a good old fire. Obviously, have some lights on hand - lanterns and flashlights are good, a flashlight will do when you're just sitting around but lanterns are much nicer.

I've been telling my friends and family to prepare now. Because I imagine tonight or tommrow news metrologists will start having some stronger wording.
Same.. already did my preparation today!! Me and dad!! 184$ at a non packed , fully stocked Walmart! As much as I’ve seen even on fb.. chaos will ensue very soon I’m sure!

I'm in a new subdivision with underground utilities and trees so young if the one each yard has fell over we could snap it in half and throw it in the fireplace, but we still experience power outages.

I guess I'll buy a few gas cans as well

Good grief - 12Z GFS puts me under either ZR or SN for 63 hours here in west blount county AL - hrs 87-150. I mean - What?

Edit: 0.63 of ice and 10inches of snow. Oh heck no. Time for this system to get some fail modes, please.
