Wonder if the NHC is going to borrow a page from their Laura playbook and use the term "unsurvivable storm surge" again. Given how bad things are looking right now I wouldn't be surprised at all.
Speaking of Laura, Ida's track is looking eerily similar to that storm and Last Island 1856.

Ida is not looking quite as healthy on satellite.
The hurricane's small eye is currently over land plus the storm is battling intense wind shear so that's no surprise.

Really not a good situation.
My guess is the storm will start to undergo rapid intensification once the eye enters the Gulf and the wind shear calms down.

Apparently there are problems with drainage pumps in New Orleans. When it rains, it pours (literally).
Well that happened much quicker than anyone probably expected...
Talk about luck. Louisiana also happens to be in the one unfortunate spot where hurricanes love to make landfall despite the state taking up a fraction of the Gulf Coast...
