2025 Political Thread

You aren’t willing to actually discuss topics, why would we want to do your silly social media quiz?
You made unsubstantiated claims that I am a person "who thinks that I'm not a racist because I have friends who are Black" in relation to a post I made that some people on the left are triggered by the Constitution and Declaration of Independence but would not mind living in a society like Orwell describes in Nineteen Eighty Four, where you can get arrested for stuff you post on social media. This is already happening in some places in Europe where the people suffering from TFS, such as Ellen DeGeneres have already fled to.

I've been holding off from replying to posts because it's getting exhausting to argue with people who loathe Donald Trump or anyone that voted for him and consider them to be uneducated racists. I have a Master's Degree so I am not uneducated, but some people here remind me of the woman on the subway who gave a lecture to a person (non-white) wearing a MAGA hat that they're an uneducated racist and then she tried to chase him and fell flat on the concrete.

If you have a higher degree, why are you posting so many unsubstantiated claims and outright lies without verifying/researching their contents? It is not just liberals questioning you here. I loathe Donald Trump and his allies for what they are doing to minorities, the economy, our science and healthcare infrastructure, and the general corruption/lack of thought that has gone into nearly all of their actions so far. Tariffs are not a good thing for a country's economy and particularly anyone who isn't filthy rich.

This guy is literally Hitler.

But the snowflakes on the left (and some even who are Republicans) who care more about illegal immigrants than America citizens will continue to make themselves known throughout April. Keep burning those Teslas.

That finding is based on a single informant, who claimed that the guy lived in a state that he has never actually set foot in. There is no other additional evidence that the man is at all connected to these gangs.

From https://www.npr.org/2025/04/07/nx-s...ia-supreme-court-dhs-ice-trump-administration

“the MS-13 allegations are based largely on an accusation from a confidential informant who accused him of being a member of the gang in New York, a state where Abrego Garcia has never lived.

Judge Xinis described the accusations as "vague" and "uncorroborated," and noted that the Trump administration has introduced no evidence of a criminal indictment or complaint into the record.

Likewise, the Trump administration has not made public intelligence reports or other evidence to support the allegation that Abrego Garcia was involved in human trafficking.”

Again, if you do at least a little bit of critical thinking, and not just accept everything spoonfed to you you can actually understand what’s going on here.

I don't know enough economics to accept or challenge this investment-surplus argument, but it sounds like sense:

...Rather than reviving U.S. manufacturing, Trump's extreme tariffs and erratic foreign policy are likely to instead scare off foreign investors altogether and undercut the dollar's global role. That would indeed shrink the trade deficit -- but only by eroding the very pillars of the country's economic dominance, at a steep cost to American firms and families.

Congress is beyond derelict at their job.
They're scared of the people who, with the best of intentions, read their own good will and hopes into "MAGA" and don't realize that the "great" part is puny compared to true US greatness, which goes beyond any one political movement -- as it was intended to and does quite well.

Also, that there's no going back to the 1980s. All that loot in the billionaires boys club is not going to trickle down.

No going back to the 1880s, either, but I guess we're going to have to relearn that lesson

I really and truly hope that Congress members saw and understood why so many people -- UPI said 500,000 total, but ? if that's confirmed -- came to the "Hands Off!" protests this weekend, more despite the organizers than because of them, I suspect.

In a word -- frustration.

The country -- and my health care as well as my Social Security -- are in the best of hands. Not. (Read the whole thread.)

Meanwhile, on the Gulf front, a win for the Associated Press and its influential style guide.

Some refreshing words:

Under the First Amendment, if the Government opens its doors to some journalists—be it to the Oval Office, the East Room, or elsewhere—it cannot then shut those doors to other journalists because of their viewpoints,” McFadden wrote. “The Constitution requires no less.”

Opposition to the tariffs must be significant if King Donald feels obliged to call it names.

Evil Democrats continue to use Nineteen Eighty Four as a policy guide. This is why they got Trump 2.0

Meanwhile the Chicken Little mainstream media will continue to panic like the tariffs will cause Great Depression 2.0.

The stock market crashing is one thing. Bond yields surging and bond prices dropping while the stock market crashes IS something to panic about. It means that either people no longer trust the solvency of anything American, that someone is dumping a major amount of US treasuries, or that the bond market seriously believes we're headed for stagflation.

You can forget about refinancing the trillions in debt we have due this year into anything longer term with a lower rate. Lower interest rates was a specific goal of this administration and part of the rationale for the imposition of tariffs. It is backfiring badly. Rates have a massive impact on the daily life of the average American. Car loans, mortgages, and business capital will be getting MORE expensive as we enter a recession. This is stagflation on steroids. We'll be begging for stagnant economic growth if this continues to play out in this way.

The Fed cannot cut rates in stagflation heightening the economic pain that people will feel as they lose their jobs. There's nothing chicken little about it. It is basic economics and now the market has ALWAYS functioned. There's been many political leaders who think they can bully the market into submission. Hasn't been one that has won that battle in all of history.

Of course, if the AP and its fellows had been this gungho for truth, justice, and the American Way (Superman emoji), they would have questioned the last president's mental capacity long before its loss became undeniable, made a big issue about the vice president refusing to do her constitutional duty until she actually did it and perhaps even did at least an adequate job of it and got herself primaried and elected over DT, or maybe this, maybe that -- anyway, had the press not looked the other way when "their side" was in office, we wouldn't be in this mess now.

We'd be in some other mess, but not likely to such a degree that Dave Barry will be hard put to parody 2025 this December.

The leader of Immigration and Customs Enforcement said that his dream for the agency is squads of trucks rounding up immigrants for deportation the same way that Amazon trucks crisscross American cities delivering packages.
Read this and tell me why people should not be calling them Nazis.

Oh so you mean they are paying taxes and contributing to the economy then? Good lord, every single immigrant in this country is in danger.

The government always promised that this information would never be shared with immigration authorities. My guess is that they are going to use this data to match up against the "Alien Registration Requirement" that was implemented via executive order.

Noem has previewed this by stating that the registration deadline has now passed and that they now consider it a criminal offense if an alien has not registered through the new process. This allows them to label anyone who hasn't registered as a criminal when in court. Or, even when doing press releases to try to build public support. Crossing the border without legal authorization has previously always been considered a civil offense. Same for unlawful presence.

Yet again Congress has abdicated their responsibility as the legislative branch. If we want to create a criminal offense related to alien registration then that is the job of Congress. This administration doing so via executive order is a violation of the Constitution. It is also bad policy, however, a lot of people with alien family members voted for this. We'll see if they change their mind by the time the mid-terms roll around.

Markets remain undefeated. Trump blinked.

That is pure market manipulation and is stupidly illegal, he's holding the economy hostage so his merry band of assholes can make boatloads of money.
