2025 Political Thread

You need not be a Democrat or Republican to see the damage being done and say "it's wrong".
No, but neither party should be surprised it is happening. It's exactly what they said they were going to do.

Correct. They telegraphed they were going to do this. It isn't about politics. I don't care if my best friend was President. I wouldn't support gutting NOAA and the NWS. It is an immensely impactful government service that costs a tiny fraction of our budget. Yet, it provides outsized positive impacts to the entire country.

Again, it was made extremely clear this was going to happen. Not a soul should register even mild surprise.

From other sources it sounds like 15-16% of NOAA is being cut. The NWS and many other NOAA entities were already chronically understaffed.

There should be tremendous outrage that this is even happening. (I've avoided posting or looking at this thread for the sake of my sanity, especially as someone who will be impacted by the cuts to medicaid.)

Hearing a couple reports that the NWS has been given a deadline of the March 13th for *another* 30% deduction in the workforce. Really despicable, to be honest. Don't know how anyone in their right mind could possibly defend that. Let's just hope its not true.

Common sense tells me that both sides should absolutely be seeing what has happened and what will continue to happen as a major issue on the science/funding aspect of things. Unfortunately, many Americans are too absorbed in their own side, especially on the right as of recently, to form opinions independent of the party they align themselves to. It really is such a shame. Anyone who believes this is fixing an issue of "climate change fearmongering" or things like that is totally and utterly out of their mind.

Trump promised more jobs and all him and his party has done thus far is force massive layoffs and impose ridiculous tariffs on other countries - and it's only been just over a month since he's been inaugurated.

Sadly the fixing "climate change fearmongering" part is literally why it is being dismantled.

"Together, these form a colossal operation that has become one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry and, as such, is harmful to future U.S. prosperity. This industry’s mission emphasis on prediction and management seems designed around the fatal conceit of planning for the unplannable. That isnot to say NOAA is useless, but its current organization corrupts its useful functions. It should be broken up and downsized.

NOAA today boasts that it is a provider of environmental information services, a provider of environmental stewardship services, and a leader in applied scientific research. Each of these functions could be provided commercially, likely at lower cost and higher quality."

Couldn't resist...

Trump is a populist at heart, much like Bill Clinton. He wants to be loved. Revered even. Clinton was just much better at making it seem like it was his plan all along. If it ever gets to the point that they are truly going to attempt to dismantle NOAA, I *feel* like Trump would put a stop to it so he could brag about saving NOAA. "Sleepy Joe couldn't save NOAA, but your favorite President did just that!"

This is not an I-told-you so, it's verbalizing a lesson I've learned over the past forty years or so: good people project themselves and their hopes onto politicians of all sides, and politicians exploit that (as I learned after voting for some, including Clinton in '92, and then seeing what they did afterwards that didn't follow my hopes and dreams at all).

Most of them, not with such ruthless enthusiasm, though.

Now it's NOAA's turn today, and maybe the fools doing the firing today will try to rehire people tomorrow or when a weather issue comes up, as they're doing over at the nuclear agency.

The head-choppers are not exactly America's finest or brightest.

What I said in my last post and this: Trump is not a populist, or he wouldn't be offering gold cards so his fellow billionaires internationally can come here and partake of the spoils of this deniable coup after it is accomplished.

A quarter-million Canadians signed a petition to revoke Musk's citizenship. I doubt he cares very much, with the power trip he's on now. He's way above the new American gold-card caste now.

I will do what I've done since 2016..... blame the 1/3 Republican primary voters that got all gung ho for Trump and Rubio and Cruz for putting their egos ahead of their country and splitting the "intelligent and thoughtful" voting bloc, giving the mouth breather wing of the party momentum. I didn't like Cruz, but i can't imagine ever thinking Trump was a better candidate than him.

I'm betting they (Rubio and Cruz) have not exactly impressed you since, either.

Let's just say i wouldn't let anyone talk about my wife the way Cruz let Trump talk about his. And then he bowed down and kissed the ring. It says a lot about the "man".

Rubio had potential but ended up like all the rest of the politicians. With that said, I'm glad he's SOS. He's at least an adult in the room.

Ah, speaking of Musk - he's now poised to yoink a $2,400,000,000 FAA contract from Verizon.

It's also speculated that the $42,000,000,000 or so in BEAD funding through NTIA to build fiber optic networks in rural areas is going to be clawed back and given to Starlink when the new chair is appointed. That $100,000,000 campaign donation was a bargain.

I'm jumping in on this topic right here, I haven't fully read the previous pages so apologies if it was answered. But do we have a complete accounting of exactly what positions have been cut so far? "Cutting NOAA employees" could mean all of the public outreach graphic design team. It unfortunately doesn't sound that benign though.

I'm too tired to go looking around, but I do know that some of those layed off included members of the EMC team which manages model data and a number of well-seasoned employees that were recently promoted, in addition to the many probationary employees.

It includes many probationary NWS meteorologists.

But do we have a complete accounting of exactly what positions have been cut so far?

Good idea. Also how the decisions were made and the criteria used on public employees of my government.

There are some sobering tweets on X -- what I recall most vividly is Levi Cowan saying his wife, at the Tsunami Warning Center, was fired and also seeing that one station in Alaska will no longer be sending up balloons.
