Winter threat: 1/9-12/ 25

i most definitely have. i happen to like extreme weather. if there is a forecast for the low to be 8 degrees, i hope it drops to 5. if there is a forecast for it to be 103, i hope we break a record and hit 105. when models run in the spring, i like seeing STPs increase from run to run. when a hurricane is rolling through the ocean, i am disappointed when the pressure rises 5 millibars and excited when rapid intensification occurs. when a big summer storm rolls through, i look at the peak wind gust as a high score -- 70 is cooler than 30.

i think deep down, most weather geeks feel the same way, particularly when it comes to unusual events in their part of the world (like winter storms here) whether they admit it publicly or not.

I like extreme weather, but not icky weather. I call it Ick instead of ice on purpose. I get what you are saying, but I consider ice to be unrealized snow.

let's be clear that i would certainly prefer snow to ice... but 35 and rain? cmon. that's boring as hell. i'll take me an inch of sleet over that.

Listening to the crack of pine trees and wondering what roof or power line the next one will take out is a memory you don't shake. Sleet is fine. Snow is fine. Rain is disappointing, but better than Ick. Freezing rain is the devil.

i may be in the minority on this board (though i suspect deep down i am not...) but i would rather us see a good ice storm than a cold rain.

Not me. I sat in the dark for two weeks after the 94 ice storm.

if we gave truth serum to those of us who experienced the blizzard of '93, i think most of us would say we prefer the event to go down exactly as it did... even with the power outages and infrastructure being crippled... over a cold rainy day.

are any of those returns in mississippi reaching the ground yet? last i checked it was raining and 36 at pine bluff, arkansas... cloudy and 36 at memphis.

I experienced the Midsouth ice storm of 1994 and if I live to be 100, I hope I don't ever see anything like that again, and I feel confident in saying every single person who experienced it with me that has an IQ over 75 would agree. Extreme weather is fine, but I'll pass on the deadly weather.

BMX has had our low near Selma at 32 up until this afternoon, but now it is forecast to be 34. Is the "warm nose" the reason for the recent change in our low temperatures?

Yes, it is 43 at KBHM, but it's 36.5 20 mile NE of there in my backyard, and cooler elsewhere as noted. Every little degree makes a difference on a micro level - 22Z HRRR initialization for temps
