Winter Weather Season 2025-26

00Z GEM still hitting it. Waiting on the 00Z Euro before I start to get real concerned.

00Z19 run. Centerted on Saturday 24th at 21Z. 3RD run in a row verifiying a probable Winter Storm/major icing event at this time.

00z Euro and 00z Canadian Parallel are ice storm city from West TN into North MS.

00z GDPS/GFS/Euro/EPS all big hits. Euro/EPS are a crippling ice storm from the Lower MS Vly to the Carolinas. High probs for ZR but may get a little sleety. 00z GEFS is promising for winter lovers as well but more snowy.

00z Ukie/AIGFS/AIEuro runs show the potential failure modes with this event. Low runs the Appalachians and nothing but a cold rain for Dixie. May not be as believable a scenario right now. But shows why we need to get closer before getting our hopes up.

Just a delicate forecast, but the background pattern favors a productive system. Expect a lot of waffling and weenie cliff diving.

Spann is already saying there's potential for a winter storm over northern half of Alabama
I’m glad that Spann got to practice doing long form winter weather coverage on the Alabama Weather Network on Sunday while impacts from that system were minimal. This system over north Alabama this weekend looks like it will be a lot more impactful.

Those are some ugly maps. I've lived in the Birmingham area for all but two winters (1994-1995 and 1995-1996) since 1988 and have never experienced a major, crippling freezing rain event. I guess February of 1996 was pretty bad, but I missed that one. We had a lot of sleet in early January of 2011 at my place, along with some snow. It has always seemed that places both east and west of us are more prone to ice storms, but our luck will run out eventually!

I was attending Samford during the storm of Feb. '96 and it was horrible. A bunch of student volunteers were feeding students in the caf and I waddled like a penguin from my dorm on the other end of campus to the main building. Took me an hour.
