Winter Weather/Extreme Cold Threat 1/13-1/17

We got a coating here and it seems that Arlington and/or VDOT didn't do a great job of brining the roads so it's a good thing I don't have to go anywhere today. Supposed to get another 2" overnight (which would quadruple our snow for all of last year) so hopefully I can get out of going into the office tomorrow. You'd think a major northeastern city would be pretty good at handling snow, but you'd be wrong.
 
Nothing remarkable in South Huntsville so far today, ground has the smallest dusting of sleet in the gardens. Hoping that will change but I don't see that warm nose 800-900mb going away on the models IMBY. Only takes a couple degrees though.
 
27° here in Northern Lowndes County, MS and we have nothing. I don’t want ice, but my daughter will be disappointed there’s not anything. I know this is far from over though.

Yeah. I admit I'm kinda disappointed myself, but the main event wasn't until today so we still have a shot at snow accumulations.
 
Well, I optimistically was hoping for Morris as the dividing line, instead it's just north of me in Cullman county. How excruciating.
 
The latest HREF (0z) shows accumulating freezing rain is possible across most of Alabama. (Note it is only 24-hour accumulation, so some areas up north are actually higher, they're just beyond the 24-hour window). I expect for most of the state, this is only travel headaches.

Yep, now I'm hoping for anything but ice. I'd even happily take nothing. A lot still to go with this one though.

Looking upstream, the banding that has been hammering Memphis and NW MS is parked in the same general area it was yesterday, but I do note a good amount of returns in coastal SE TX. It's not exactly a really wet system, but I don't see it completely running out of moisture. HRRR parks the heaviest band where it is for the next 12 hours though, so hopefully once it decides to move it will run out of moisture. I don't really see that happening though. Looks to be a slippery situation when the band does finally decide to move south. I can't see much of it falling as snow south of Cullman. If you are in Birmingham and have to see snow, you're most likely going to have to drive north for it. I hope I'm wrong.
