On this day in 1896, the temperature at San Francisco, California fell to 33 degrees. This is the city's coldest March temperature on record.
On this day in 1942, Asheville, North Carolina picked up 15.8 inches of snow. This established their 24-hour snowfall record.
On this day in 1953, snow falls on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.
On this day in 1966, the F5 Candlestick Park tornado hit Jackson, MS causing devastating damage and leading to 57 fatalities. It tracked up to 202.5 miles.
On this day in 1971, Worcester, Massachusetts saw a record low pressure of 960mbar.
On this day in 1982, Severe Tropical Cyclone Isaac in the South Pacific had winds of 130mph, gusts to 150mph, with a pressure of 930mbar. It caused 6 fatalities on the island of Tonga.
On this day in 1988, a tornado affected a part of Southern MS tossing a car 150 feet.
On this day in 1989, the high temperature in Oklahoma City reached 74 degrees, but this next morning, it was 16 degrees.
On this day in 2003, Miami, Florida recorded their earliest 90-degree day since 1964.
On this day in 2003, Marquette, Michigan recorded their low temperature in March at -30 degrees.
On this day in 2009, Richmond International Airport dropped to 11 degrees. Breaking the previous low temperature record of 14 degrees back in 1925.
On this day in 2020, a deadly tornado outbreak produced a high end EF3 that hit Nashville, TN. With estimated winds of 165mph, it caused 5 fatalities and $1.504 billion in damages. It is the 6th costliest tornado in U.S. history. A strong EF4 tornado with estimated winds of 175mph hit Cookeville, TN. It caused 19 fatalities and $100 million in damages. Overall, this outbreak led to 15 tornadoes, 25 fatalities, and $1.607 billion in damages.

On this day in 1899, Cyclone Mahina affected Australia. It is considered to have had winds of category 5 intensity (160+mph) and a central pressure of 880mbar. It caused more than 300 fatalities and catastrophic damage. It produced the largest storm surge on record at 43 ft!
On this day in 1951, Riverside, California recorded their coldest temperature in March at 28 degrees.
On this day in 1952, Palm Springs, California recorded their coldest temperature in March at 29 degrees.
On this day in 1961, a F2 tornado hit Chicago, Illinois causing one fatality and significant damage.
On this day in 1983, Brownsville, Texas recorded a high of 100 degrees. It is the earliest the city has ever hit the century mark on record.
On this day in 1989, a strong F3 tornado hit Brownsville, MS and thunderstorm winds gusted to 90mph at Canton, MS.

On this day in 1894, San Diego, California fell to 36 degrees. Their coldest temperature on record for March.
On this day in 1958, Honolulu, Hawaii saw an all-time 24-hour rainfall total of 17.41 inches.
On this day in 1963, a F4 tornado hit Bessemer, Alabama. Staying on the ground for 15 miles, it destroyed 29 buildings and damaged up to 225 houses. There are no known fatalities from this tornado.
On this day in 1972, Palm Springs, California hit 100 degrees. The earliest date in the year to reach the century mark on record.
On this day in 1989, a strong F2 tornado hit Heard County, Georgia leading to 1 fatality and another F3 tornado hit Grantville, Georgia causing up to $5 million in damages.

On this day in 2021, Severe Tropical Cyclone Niran had winds of 160mph, gusts to 180mph, with a pressure of 931mbar. It affected Queensland, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu. While no fatalities were reported, it caused greater than $200 million in damages.

On this day in 1967, an F4 tornado hit Walker and Jefferson Counties in Alabama tracking up for 30 miles. It led to 2 fatalities.
On this day in 1988, Severe Tropical Cyclone Bola had winds of 120mph, gusts to 140mph, with a pressure of 940mbar. It caused 7 fatalities and $82 million in damages. It affected the South Pacific islands of Fiji, Vanuatu, and New Zealand.
On this day in 1996, a tornado hit North of Selma, Alabama causing 4 fatalities. Another tornado hit east of Montgomery, Alabama causing 2 fatalities. A tornado rated F3 affected Dallas County, Alabama causing 4 fatalities and up to $8 million in damages.

On this day in 2004, Very Intense Tropical Cyclone Gafilo had winds of 160mph, gusts to 180mph, with a pressure of 895mbar. It made landfall on Madagascar. Leading to 363 fatalities and up to $250 million in damages.
On this day in 2008, An EF2 tornado hit Lake City, Florida. It led to 1 fatality.
On this day in 2017, Intense Tropical Cyclone Enawo had winds of 150mph, gusts to 170mph, with a pressure of 932mbar. It made landfall on Madagascar. It led to 78 fatalities and up to $400 million in damages.

On this day in 1871, an F3 tornado hit St. Louis, Missouri. It led up to 9 fatalities and up to $1.5 million in damages. It is only one of 4 tornadoes that have hit the St. Louis metro area.

On this day in 1908, a category 2 hurricane affected the U.S. Virgin Islands. Having winds up to 100mph, it is the only known Atlantic hurricane/tropical system to occur in the month of March.

On this day in 1909, Brinkley, Arkansas was hit by a strong F4 tornado that led to 49 fatalities and up to $600,000 in damages.

On this day in 1971, Orange, Vermont had 88 inches of snow on the ground with Mount Mansfield having 116 inches of snow. Both of these were new records for 2nd highest snowfall depth and low elevation snow depth.

On this day in 1972, a wind gust of 207mph was recorded at the Thule Air Force Base in Greenland. Winds were sustained at over 146mph for three hours during the storm.

On this day in 1990, a tornado formed south of Augusta, Illinois and tracked up to 42 miles to Marbleton, Illinois.

On this day in 1997, Severe Tropical Cyclone Gavin had winds of 140mph, gusts to 160mph, with a pressure of 925mbar. It affected Tuvalu, Wallis and Futuna, Fiji, and New Zealand in the South Pacific. It led to 18 fatalities and up to $23.7 million in damages.

On this day in 1774, a waterspout came onshore at Nantucket Harbor, Massachusetts destroying a lighthouse as well as several barns and shops.
On this day in 1891, Up to a foot of snow with snowdrifts up to 11.5 feet were reported in London, England.
On this day in 1922, Dodge City, Kansas sets its all-time 24-hour snowfall record at 17.5 inches.
On this day in 1948, Kansas sets its all-time record low temperature in March at -25 degrees in Healy, Kansas.
On this day in 1956, a whopping 367 inches of snow was measured on the ground at the Rainier Paradise Ranger Station in Washington. The snow depth was a state record and the 2nd highest total of record in the continental U.S. at the time.
On this day in 1957, a magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck near the Aleutians causing a 52.5 feet high tsunami at Haeni, Hawaii. Fortunately, no fatalities occurred.
On this day in 2005, Severe Tropical Cyclone Ingrid had winds of 155mph, gusts to 175mph, with a pressure of 924mbar. It led to 5+ fatalities and up to $14.4 million in damages.
On this day in 2012, Hail the size of grapefruit pummeled Oahu, Hawaii. It is the largest hailstone on record in the state of Hawaii.

On this day in 1884, John Park Finley issued the first experimental tornado prediction. Finley had studied the atmospheric parameters that were present during previous tornadoes. Many of these same criteria are still used by operational forecasters today. Use of tornado forecasts would be banned just a few years later and would remain banned until 1952.
On this day in 1912, Los Angeles, California set an all-time barometric pressure reading of 991mbar.
On this day in 1933, a major earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck Long Beach, California causing 120 fatalities.
On this day in 1971, an F2 tornado hit near Louis Armstrong Airport in Kenner, Louisiana. It led to 1 fatality and 200 homes sustained significant damage.
On this day in 1973, Very Intense Tropical Cyclone Lydie had winds of 150mph, gusts to 170mph, with a pressure of 910mbar. It led to 10 fatalities on Reunion Island.
On this day in 1980, Willard Scott becomes the meteorologist on the Today Show.

On this day in 1911, Tamarack, California reported 451 inches of snow on the ground. This is a record for the continental United States.

On this day in 1917, a tornado hit New Castle, Indiana leading to 22 fatalities and a tornado hit Cincinnati, Ohio causing 3 fatalities.

On this day in 1923, a F5 tornado hit Pinson, Tennessee leading to 20 fatalities.

On this day in 1924, up to 6.5 inches of snow fell in Birmingham, Alabama.

On this day in 1936, Palm Springs, California dropped to 29 degrees. Their latest sub-freezing temperature on record.

On this day in 1953, a F4 tornado hit Knox City, Texas leading to 17 fatalities.

On this day in 2006, a tornado hit Ramona, California.

On this day in 2010, Tropical Storm Anita had winds of 50mph, gusts to 70mph, with a pressure of 998mbars. It formed in the South Atlantic off the southern coast of Brazil. There was no damage associated with this system.

On this day in 2011, a devastating 9.0 to 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan. It led to a 133 ft high tsunami, up to 19,759 fatalities, and up to $360 billion in damages.

On this day in 2015, Severe Tropical Cyclone Pam had winds of 175mph, gusts to 195mph, with a pressure of 896mbar. It led to 16 fatalities and up to $692 million in damages. Hardest hit was Vanuatu in the South Pacific.

Today's Day In Weather History will focus on the March 1993 Storm Of The Century. This is the most fascinating storm that I've ever read about.
The Storm Of The Century began on March 12th and lasted through March 14th. This storm had everything with it. Tornadoes, Blizzard, Ice Storm, high winds, and storm surge. It led to 318 fatalities and up to $5.5 billion in damages.
Notable Aspects:
At the height of the storm, it spanned from Canada to Honduras (roughly 3,019 miles)
It produced 56 inches of snow at Mount LeConte, Tennessee, 23 inches of snow in Chattanooga, TN, 13 inches of snow in Birmingham, AL, 10 inches in Atlanta, GA, and 3 inches in Mobile, AL.
It affected 26 states and caused snow drifts up to 35 feet in areas of the Appalachian Mountain region.
The Florida Panhandle saw 4 inches of snow.
11 tornadoes were confirmed in Florida in association with a strong Derecho. Storm surge up to 12 feet occurred from Apalachee Bay in the Panhandle down to North of Tampa Bay. In Cuba, it brought wind gusts as high as 100mph in Havana with estimation that max winds could have been as high as 130mph.
Up to 60,000 lightning strikes were recorded with this wide-ranging and impacting storm for a total of 72 hours.
Nearly 40% (120 million) of the United States Population saw impacts from this storm. At the height of the storm, greater than 10 million people were without power.
A pressure reading of 976mbar was recorded at Tallahassee, Florida with an even lower pressure reading of 960mbar recorded in New England.
Following the storm, Birmingham, AL fell to 2 degrees, 17 degrees in Montgomery, AL, and 21 degrees in Mobile, AL. All record lows for March.

On this day in 1989, the Northern Lights put on a once in a lifetime display across the Southern U.S.
On this day in 1990, a major tornado outbreak affected from Northern Texas into Iowa causing up to 64 tornadoes including 10 F3, 2 F4, and 2 F5. It led to 2 fatalities and up to $543.408 million in damages. One F5 hit the town of Hesston, Kansas with the 2nd F5 hitting Goessel, KS. Both of these F5 tornadoes developed from the same supercell storm.
On this day in 1999, 19 inches of snow fell at Medford, Oklahoma.
On this day in 2003, Severe Tropical Cyclone Erica had winds of 150mph, gusts to 170mph, with a pressure of 915mbar in the South Pacific. It severely impacted the island nation of New Caledonia causing 2 fatalities and $15 million in damages.

On this day in 1870, the term "blizzard" was first used to describe a storm that produced heavy snow and high winds from Iowa to Minnesota.
On this day in 1933, a tornado outbreak affected Middle Tennessee particularly Nashville. It caused greater than 5 tornadoes including 2 F3 and 1 F4. It led to 44 fatalities and an unknown amount of damage. One F3 tornado hit downtown Nashville, Tennessee. It is the 7th deadliest tornado in Middle Tennessee on record.
On this day in 1960, Gainesville, Georgia received 17 inches of snow.
On this day in 2007, Intense Tropical Cyclone Indlala had winds of 140mph, gusts to 160mph, with a pressure of 935mbar. It impacted Madagascar causing 150 fatalities and greater than $240 million in damages.
On this day in 2008, a tornado hit Atlanta, Georgia during the NCAA basketball game in the Georgia Dome. The tornado was rated EF2 with estimated winds up to 130mph. There was only 1 fatality.

On this day of Weather History Greenville-Spartanburg SC

March 15 2008: Numerous severe thunderstorms caused widespread damage across Georgia and South Carolina, with several tornadoes reported, including at least four in the GSP area. Two of the tornadoes were weak (rated F0) and moved from Franklin County to Hart County in Georgia. Another brief tornado touched down southeast of Abbeville, South Carolina. The final, and strongest, tornado touched down in Elbert County, Georgia, southeast of Fortsonia, and tracked for 8 miles across the southern part of the county, mainly damaging trees and power lines until it encountered some homes along the Broad River. Damage was rated at EF2. This was the same system that hit downtown Atlanta during the SEC basketball tournament the night before.

On this day in 1889, the Apia Cyclone had winds estimated at 75mph, gusts to 95mph, with an unknown central pressure. It affected Samoa in the South Pacific. It caused greater than 140 fatalities and led to 7 ships (3 United States ships, 1 British ship, 3 German ships) either damaged/destroyed.
On this day in 1938, a violent F4 tornado hit Belleville, Illinois causing 10 fatalities. Another strong tornado moved in a northwest direction affecting McPaul, Iowa.
On this day in 1952, Reunion Island saw 127.56 inches of rain in 72 hours. This is the world record for most rainfall in 72 hours. Of that 127.56 inches, 73.62 inches fell in just 24 hours at Cilaos, La Reunion Island which is also a world record.
On this day in 1982, a F3 tornado hit Ada, Oklahoma leading to 1 fatality and $2 million in damages.
On this day in 1984, two F4 tornadoes hit Arkansas with one tracking up to 48 miles. It caused 2 fatalities with the 2nd F4 causing 5 fatalities.
On this day in 1986, Cyclone Honorinina had winds of 125mph, gusts to 145mph, with a pressure of 941mbar. It affected Madagascar causing 99 fatalities and up to $150 million in damages.
On this day in 2019, Intense Tropical Cyclone Idai had winds of 130mph, gusts to 150mph, with a pressure of 940mbar. It affected Mozambique, Madagascar, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. On this day in 1843, a snowstorm affected areas from the Gulf of Mexico to Maine. Shelbyville, Tennessee saw 21 inches while Memphis, Tennessee saw 10 inches. A foot of snow was reported in Baltimore, Maryland.

On this day in 1885, Pointe-des-Monts, Quebec, Canada received 98 inches of snow through the 21st.

On this day in 1942, Baldwin, MS was hit by 2 tornadoes 24 minutes apart leading to 66 fatalities.

On this day in 1942, a deadly tornado outbreak affected the Central and Southern U.S. leading to greater than 28 tornadoes. It caused 149 fatalities and $5.21 million in damages. It produced 13 F3 tornadoes, 6 F4 tornadoes, and 1 F5 tornado. This F5 tornado hit Lacon, Illinois. This is the most recent F5/EF5 tornado in Central Illinois on record.

On this day in 1899, a strong F4 tornado tracked 17 miles through Calhoun and Cleburne Counties in Alabama leading to 12 fatalities.

On this day in 1925, the deadliest tornado in U.S. history occurred. Known as the Tri-State Tornado, it was a strong F5 that traveled up to 219 miles through 3 states (Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana). It led to 695 fatalities and over $17 million in damages. It had winds estimated at or greater than 300mph. It averaged a speed of between 62 to 73mph. For reference, the Smithville, MS EF5 in 2011 had a forward speed of 70mph. The Tri-State Tornado lasted for 3.5 hours. This is the longest duration of a single tornado and also of an F5/EF5 tornado on record.

On this day in 1927, a strong F3 tornado hit Tonkawa, Oklahoma.

On this day in 1971, wind gusts in Hays, Kansas reached 115mph.

On this day in 2003, Denver, Colorado was buried under 2.5 feet of snow that fell over a span of 36 hours.

On this day in 2003, Utility poles in Madison, Wisconsin reportedly ignited as fog combined with leftover salt from the winter season created a conductive solution that allowed the poles to catch fire.

On this day in 1924, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma saw up to 11.3 inches of snow.

On this day in 1948, a strong F4 tornado hit Bunker Hill, Ilinois destroying 80% of the town. It led to 19 fatalities. All 5 churches were destroyed so two ministers organized an Easter Sunday Service the following weekend. They used a bulldozer as a pulpit and 500 attended.

On this day in 1950, Timberline Lodge in Oregon reported 246 inches of snow on the ground. A state record.

On this day in 1961, Two tornadoes touched down in Bangladesh leading to 210 fatalities.

On this day in 2002, a boy in Sabinal, Texas was hit and knocked unconscious by 4-inch size hail (grapefruit size). He was taken to a hospital where he fully recovered.
