January 10th Weather History:

On this day in 1800, Savannah, Georgia received a foot and a half of snow with 10 inches in Charleston, SC. It is the heaviest snowfall on record for the immediate coastal plain of the Southeast U.S.
On this day in 1911, the temperature in Rapid City, SD plunged 47 degrees in 15 minutes. Rapid City saw a 75-degree (62 to -13) temperature drop in just 2 hours (6 to 8am).
On this day in 1962, a massive landslide of ice, rock, and mud crashed down the side of Peru's highest Mountain, Nevado de Huascaram. The mass of debris, nearly 50 feet deep, moved 11 miles in 15 minutes and was as wide as one mile. Led to 3,500 fatalities.
On this day in 1970, Chattanooga, TN dropped to 4 degrees while both Tallahassee, FL and Charleston, SC saw a temperature of 12.
On this day in 1973, a F5 tornado with estimated winds of 260mph hit San Justo, a town in the province of Santa Fe, Argentina. It led to 63 fatalities and up to $60,000 in damages. It is the most violent tornado ever recorded in South America and in the entire Southern Hemisphere. It passed over a lagoon sucking up all the water inside of it. Dr. Ted Fujita studied this tornado and said, "the most intense and violent tornado I have ever seen outside of the United States." To date, this is the only F5/EF5 tornado on record in the Southern Hemisphere.
On this day in 1975, a F4 tornado hit McComb, MS causing 9 fatalities and major damage. Overall, this outbreak caused 45 tornadoes, 12 fatalities, and up to $43million in damages.
On this day in 1981, Fargo, ND recorded a wind chill value of -98.
On this day in 1982, the Chargers played against the Bengals at the Riverfront Stadium in an NFL Playoff game in Cincinnati. The kickoff temperature was -9.
On this day in 1989, Utah recorded it's first ever January tornado when one struck the town of Sandy.
On this day in 1997, a record 95 inches of snow fell in Montague, NY during a 5-day lake effect snow event. 40 inches fell in just 12 hours. Over a 24-hour period, Lewis County, NY recorded 77 inches of snow setting a U.S. record for most 24-hour snowfall.
On this day in 2016, Hurricane Pali was roaming in the Central Pacific. Peaking at max intensity of 100mph, gusts to 120mph, with a pressure of 978mbar, it caused 4 fatalities on Kiribati. It was the earliest forming Pacific hurricane on record, the first January hurricane since Ekeka (1992), and tracked closer to the equator than any other storm recorded in the Pacific hurricane basin.

On this day in 1898, a tornado estimated to be a strong F4 hit Fort Smith, Arkansas. Leading to 55 fatalities and $4,500,000 in damages, it is tied with the Warren tornado in 1949 as the deadliest to strike Arkansas.
On this day in 1911, Fort Vermillion, Alberta, Canada dropped to -78 degrees.
On this day in 1917, a F3 tornado hit Webb, Alabama and affecting areas near Dothan, AL. This tornado caused 10 fatalities.
On this day in 1951, a F2 tornado hit Los Gatos and Sunnyvale, California causing $1.5 million in damages. San Jose, California was also hit by an F2.
On this day in 1972, Boulder, Colorado reported a wind gust of 143mph.
On this day in 1980, the temperature at Great Falls, Montana International Airport rose from -32 to 17 in just 7 minutes as a Chinook wind warmed the arctic air. This temperature rise remains the most rapid temperature change ever registered in the United States.
On this day in 1982, Atlanta, Georgia hit -5 degrees, Birmingham, Alabama hit -1, Huntsville, Alabama hit -2, and Chattanooga, Tennessee hit 1.
On this day in 2005, Farewell Gap, California recorded 152.5 inches of snow over a 5-day period.
On this day in 2013, Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle was roaming over the Southwest Indian Ocean. Peaking at category 4 intensity with winds of 140mph, gusts to 160mph, with a pressure of 930mbar, it stayed offshore of western Australia. While it didn't directly impact Australia, it caused 14 fatalities and $74,000 in damages.

January 12th Weather History:

On this day in 1890, a tornado hit St. Louis, Missouri causing 4 fatalities. Overall, this outbreak caused 16 fatalities.

On this day in 1911, a thermometer in Rapid City, SD read 49 at 6am. Two hours later, the temperature plunged to -13 setting a record for a 2-hour temperature drop in the United States.

On this day in 1912, Washta, Iowa saw a morning low temperature of -47 setting the state record for lowest temperature.

On this day in 1916, the coldest maximum temperature ever recorded in the lower 48 was -44 in Glasgow, Montana.

On this day in 1982, Birmingham, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia were hit by a severe ice storm. The temperature in Birmingham dropped to -2 while Pensacola, Florida dropped to 8.

On this day in 1985, the palm trees in San Antonio, Texas were blanketed with up to 13 and a half inches of snow. This was the most snow that was ever previously received in an entire winter season.

On this day in 1997, Montague, New York saw a record setting 5-day snow total of 95 inches with 40 inches that fell in just 12 hours. Over a 24-hour period, Lewis County, NY recorded 77 inches of snow which is the most on record in the United States in 24 hours.

On this day in 2016, Subtropical Storm Alex formed in the Atlantic. It would peak on January 14th as a category 1 hurricane with winds of 85mph, gusts to 105mph, with a pressure of 981mbar. It led to 1 fatality but minimal damage. Alex is only the 2nd hurricane to originate in January behind the unnamed storm in 1938. Another interesting tidbit: Alex was active at the same time Hurricane Pali was in the Central Pacific. This marked the first time on record of 2 simultaneous January tropical cyclones in these two basins.

On this day in 1912, the temperature at Oakland, Maryland fell to -40 establishing a state record.

On this day in 1937, the Ohio River inundated 70% of Louisville, Kentucky and led to the desertion of Paducah, Kentucky for a time.

On this day in 1975, the temperature at Pelly Bay, Northwest Territories, Canada had a temperature of -60 with wind speed of 35mph. This led to a wicked cold wind chill value of -110!

On this day in 2006, an F1 tornado hit Belleville, Alabama leading to 1 fatality.

On this day in 2020, a EF1 tornado hit Loris, South Carolina leading to car's being flipped over. No serious damage or fatalities occurred.

On this day in 1882, 15 inches of snow fell in San Bernardino, California with a trace of snow in San Diego.
On this day in 1910, an 80-foot wave struck the luxury liner Lusitania from a storm system that produced 15 inches of snow New York City. The Lusitania would be sunk on May 7th, 1915, by a German U-boat causing 1,195 fatalities including 128 Americans. This led to the United States entering World War 1.
On this day in 1932, a tornado hit a home in Lexington, Kentucky leading to 10 fatalities.
On this day in 1972, the temperature rose from -54 to 49 on January 14th to 15th in Loma, Montana. The 103-degree temperature change is the greatest ever recorded in the world for a 24-hour period.
On this day in 1979, Typhoon Alice was on the last leg of it's journey. Forming on December 31st and lasting until January 15th, it achieved max winds of 125mph, gusts to 145mph, with a pressure of 930mbar. It impacted the Marshall Islands, but no fatalities were reported. It caused less than $500,000 in damages.
On this day in 1991, an outbreak of 11 tornadoes occurred in South and Southeast Texas including an F2. This outbreak led to 1 fatality.

On this day in 1780, the New York Harbor completely froze over and would stay that way for 5 weeks. Heavy cannons were transported across the ice.
On this day in 1852, from January 15th through February 24th, a total of 1,378 horses drew railroad cars across the Susquehanna River to engines waiting at Havre De Grace, Maryland.
On this day in 1932, Up to 2 inches of snow blanketed the Los Angeles basin with the Civic Center reporting up to an inch of snow. Even the beaches of Santa Monica were whitened by snow.
On this day in 1988, Wilmington, North Carolina saw 5 inches of snow. This was their 3rd highest for any storm in January in 117 years of records.
On this day in 2009, Depot Mountain, Northern Maine records a low temperature of -38 degrees.
On this day in 2022, the eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha`apai reached it's climax. A violent eruption occurred causing a tsunami up to 66 ft high leading to 6 fatalities and $90.4 million in damages. It generated an ash cloud up to 36 miles into the mesosphere. The underwater volcanic eruption led to 200,000 lightning strikes and sent 146 million tons of water into the stratosphere. Amount of water vapor ejected was 10% of the stratosphere's typical stock. It sent a shockwave outward that propagated around the globe with as much as 4 times in both Utah and Japan. It caused pressure fluctuations in Switzerland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Australia, and even in India. Booms were heard as far away as Yukon in Canada from a surface wave magnitude of 5.8 from the eruption.

On this day in 1219, severe flooding affects the Netherlands which led to more than a thousand fatalities.
On this day in 1889, Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia recorded a temperature of 128. This is the highest ever recorded in Australia.
On this day in 1943, Island Park Dam in Idaho recorded a temperature of -60 degrees. This is the state record low temperature.
On this day in 1959, Bennet's Bridge, New York received 51 inches of snow in just 16 hours.
On this day in 1964, Fort Worth, Texas received 7.5 inches of snow and Dallas, Texas reported a foot of snow.
On this day in 1982, Amarillo dropped from 55 to -1 degrees while Oklahoma City dropped from 62 to 10 degrees.
On this day in 1994, Severe Tropical Cyclone Rewa was meandering over the South Pacific. Having formed on December 26th, 1993, it remained fairly weak until December 30th when it achieved category 1 intensity. On January 2nd, 1994, it reached peak intensity of 145mph, gusts to 165mph, with a pressure of 920mbars. In the days after, it fluctuated in intensity. It affected the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Eastern Australia, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and New Zealand. It wasn't until January 23rd until it dissipated. Lasting for 28 days, it affected 6 countries leading to 22 fatalities. Rewa is the longest lasting tropical cyclone in the South Pacific on record.
On this day in 2004, Mount Washington Observatory, New Hampshire reported a wind chill value of -97. At this time, winds were up to 92mph with an actual temperature of -39.
On this day in 2009, an all-time record low temperature of -50 was recorded in Maine.

On this day in 1982, the NCAR building in Boulder, Colorado measured a wind gust to 137mph from a strong chinook wind.

On this day in 1857, Richmond, Virginia was cut off from Washington, D.C. for a week due to snow.

On this day in 1930, Watts, Oklahoma dropped to -27. This is the coldest night on record for Oklahoma.

On this day in 1973, a tornado (estimated at F2 or F3 intensity) hit Corey, Louisiana. A baby was carried 300 to 400 yards by the strong winds. Thankfully, the child survived with only minor injuries.

On this day in 1980, Tropical Cyclone Hyacinthe produced 223.5 inches of rain at Commerson, La Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean from the 18th through the 27th. This is the most rainfall ever recorded in a 10-day period on record globally. It also produced 127.6 inches of rain in just a 72-hour period at Grand-llet, La Reunion Island.

On this day in 1982, Bridgehampton, New York recorded a temperature of -10 degrees.

On this day in 1988, a small tornado in Orange County, California lifted a baseball dugout 15 feet into the air.

On this day in 1992, 7 inches of snow fell across North Alabama.

On this day in 1993, 36 inches of snow fell in just 9 hours at Adams, New York.

On this day in 1937, Boca, California dropped to -45 degrees. California's coldest temperature ever recorded.
On this day in 1954, Rogers Pass, Montana plunged to -70 degrees establishing a new record for the continental United States.
On this day in 1977, food had to be airlifted to Smith and Tangier Island in the lower Chesapeake Bay due to ice that was 11 inches thick on the Potomac River. The barometric pressure at St. Anthony, Newfoundland, Canada dropped to 940.2mbars. The lowest sea level pressure ever recorded in Canada.
On this day in 1985, St. Louis and Columbia, Missouri recorded their all-time coldest temperatures of -48 and -44. The high temperature at Muscle Shoals, Alabama never got above zero. The extreme cold caused television cable wires to shrink resulting in service disruptions across Virginia.
On this day in 1991, the system that would become Cyclone Bella formed in the Southwest Indian Ocean. Bella reached category 1 status on January 28th with winds at 75mph gusts to 95mph. By January 29th, it would reach max intensity of 150mph, gusts to 170mph, with a pressure of 936mbar. It caused 36 fatalities on the Island of Rodrigues.
On this day in 2010, an EF3 tornado hit Waskom, Texas causing up to $1.5 million in damages. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported.

I know this isn't an OTD post, but speaking of weather history, the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is now the highest on record for this time of year, and could outpace 1982-83 for the highest overall if this weather pattern continues.

On this day in 1854, Sacramento, California dropped to 19 degrees.
On this day in 1893, Lubbock, Texas saw up to 16.8 inches of snow. Plainview, Texas recorded 18 inches of snow and Dalhart, Texas saw up to 15 inches.
On this day in 1922, the barometer at Collegeville, Minnesota hit 31.11 inches of mercury (1053.5mbar). The highest recorded pressure in Minnesota on record.
On this day in 1936, a temperature of -55 was recorded at Warroad, Minnesota.
On this day in 1962, Snow fell in San Francisco, California.
On this day in 1985, Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina fell to -34 setting a new state record. Also, Caesars Head, South Carolina recorded a temperature of -19 setting a new state record. Jacksonville, Florida fell to it's all-time record low of 7 degrees and Macon, Georgia fell to 6 degrees.
On this day in 1993, Along the Sierra Crest near Lake Tahoe, California, winds were sustained at 122mph with gusts to 176mph.
On this day in 1999, the biggest tornado outbreak in January occurred. From January 21st through 23rd, this outbreak produced 128 tornadoes including 1 F4 that hit Knobel, Arkansas. Another notable tornado was an F3 that hit Little Rock, Arkansas causing 3 fatalities. Since 1982, there's been just 3 High Risks issued in the month of January from SPC (Storm Prediction Center) including this outbreak.
On this day in 2000, a powerful Nor`easter developed an eye like feature and had a pressure of 954mbar off the coast of New England.
On this day in 2013, a 5.9 earthquake hit Indonesia causing 1 fatality.

January 22nd Weather History:

On this day in 1837, a earthquake hits Southern Syria causing thousands of fatalities.

On this day in 1904, a violent F4 tornado hit Moundville, Alabama leading to 36 fatalities.

On this day in 1930, Mt. Carroll, Illinois dropped to -35. The coldest temperature ever recorded in the state.

On this day in 1936, Twin Cities, Minnesota saw their coldest wind chill temperature ever of -67.

On this day in 1943, a Chinook wind caused the temperature in Spearfish, South Dakota to rise from -4 below to 45 above in just 2 minutes! By 9am, the temperature has risen to 54 plunging to -4 in 27 minutes. In Lead, South Dakota, the significant change in temperatures caused plate glass windows to crack. Motorists who drove from Deadwood, SD (with a temperature of -16) to Lead, SD (with a temperature of 52) found it difficult to drive as their windshields would instantly frost over from a warm pocket to a cold one.

On this day in 1965, the US launches TIROS 9 weather satellite.

On this day in 1982, Boulder, Colorado recorded a wind gust of 150mph.

On this day in 1985, Mountain Lake, Virginia fell to -30 degrees. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Virginia.

On this day in 1999, an F3 tornado hit Clarksville, Tennessee leading to severe damage. While no one was killed thankfully, it caused $72million in damages.

On this day in 2017, a major tornado outbreak occurred. Beginning on January 21st and lasting through January 23rd, it produced 81 confirmed tornadoes (2nd highest total for a January outbreak) including 3 EF3 tornadoes. The first EF3 hit Hattiesburg, MS with estimated winds of 145mph. Causing 4 fatalities and $9.46million in damages. The second EF3 hit Adel, Georgia with estimated winds of 140mph. Causing 11 fatalities and $2.5million in damages. The 3rd and final EF3 hit Albany, Georgia with estimated winds of 150mph. Causing 5 fatalities and $310million in damages. Overall, this outbreak caused 20 fatalities and $1.3billion in damages.

On this day in 1556, the Shaanix, China earthquake. A magnitude 8.0, it led to an estimated 830,000 fatalities. It is the deadliest earthquake ever recorded.
On this day in 1812, A 7.8 earthquake hits New Madrid, Missouri. Part of the ongoing aftershocks from the first New Madrid quake in December 1811.
On this day in 1916, Browning, Montana plummeted 100 degrees in 24 hours going from 44 down to -56. This is the greatest temperature drop ever recorded globally in 24 hours.
On this day in 1935, Iroquois Falls, Ontario, Canada dropped to -72.9 degrees. The coldest day on record for Canada.
On this day in 1969, Hazlehurst, MS was hit by an F4 tornado causing 32 fatalities.
On this day in 1971, Prospect Creek, Alaska plunged to -79.8 degrees. The coldest reading on record for the United States. An unofficial reading of -82 was reported at Coldfoot, Alaska. Up 15,000 ft on Mt. McKinley, a thermometer for 19 years recorded a low temperature of -100 at sometime during it's exposure according to the US Army Natick Laboratories.
On this day in 1994, Duluth, Minnesota fell below zero for a record 186 consecutive hours.
On this day in 1997, a tornado outbreak produced 16 confirmed tornadoes with 1 F4. This tornado hit Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Another notable tornado that occurred was the F2 that hit Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This tornado led to 1 fatality and $5.005 million in damages. Total damage from this outbreak was $16.771 million.

On this day in 1857, the temperature was -30 degrees in Boston, Massachusetts and down to -11 on Nantucket Island.
On this day in 1922, Danbury, Wisconsin hit -54 degrees. The coldest recorded temperature east of the Mississippi River and the coldest ever recorded in Wisconsin.
On this day in 1939, an 8.3 magnitude earthquake hit Chillan, Chile. Causing between 28,000 to 30,000 fatalities, it's considered the single deadliest quake in Chile.
On this day in 1956, 38 inches of rain fell at the Kilauea Sugar Plantation in Hawaii in 24 hours with up to 12 inches falling in just one hour.
On this day in 1963, Nashville, Tennessee hit -15 degrees. This is the city's coldest all-time record temperature.

On this day in 1982, Chinook winds caused a gust to 140mph at Wondervu, Colorado.
On this day in 1997, Intense Tropical Cyclone Gretelle peaked at winds of 140mph, gusts to 160mph, with a pressure of 950mbar as it made landfall near Farafangana, Madagascar. The first cyclone to do so in 41 years. It caused 152 fatalities and $50.05million in damages.
On this day in 2003, Ocean effect snow showers were reported in Flagler Beach, Florida.
On this day in 2006, an ivu (a surge of ice from the ocean onto the shore) came ashore in Barrow, Alaska. The first since 1978, it caused piles of ice 25 feet high on the roads. Front end loaders were called in to remove the ice.
On this day in 2012, Intense Tropical Cyclone Funso peaked at winds of 140mph, gusts to 160mph, with a pressure of 925mbar as it pulled away from South Africa. Even though it didn't affect land directly, it caused an estimated 40 fatalities.

On this day in 1939, an 8.3 magnitude earthquake hit Chillan, Chile. Causing between 28,000 to 30,000 fatalities, it's considered the single deadliest quake in Chile.
I hate to say it, but we are way way overdue for something of this magnitude. I'm glad I don't live in California or along the Eastern Ring of Fire.

Having one of the most famous fault lines in the world 800 feet from my front doorstep is NOT something to brag about, but I guess it slightly (not saying much for me, though) beats living along the Cascadia subduction zone or in Caruthersville, Missouri (or any of the tornado magnet towns that are also on top of the New Madrid fault line)...
