Weather Banter

Not sure where else to post this - just woke up to hail hitting the window and an incredibly loud noise outside, scared us and the dogs so bad we jumped out of bed and ran downstairs! Checked the radar and wonder if we didn’t just have a spin up tornado go over the house - what do you think?

It's snowing this morning...seems like flurries are the hardest harmless type of weather to forecast, considering i haven't seen a chance for any snow today

We had two winter seasons after moving to our current location (2022-23 and 2023-24) where we got pathetic snow. The 2023-24 Winter was a little better for my location due to El Nino bringing higher snow chances but we only got one somewhat minor snow event.

This winter, despite a Modoki La Nina, we have gotten at least 4 inches of snow from 2 winter storms less than a week apart (from Blair and Cora). We had bad ice problems that are just now tampering down.

I wonder what is going on this winter to give up better snow chances than the last two seasons.

Take the last two winters and completely reverse them, and that's how it's been out here in northern Utah. 2022-2023 the mountains here in northern Utah all broke snow records, and 2023-2024 was a well above average winter as well in the mountains. 2022-2023 was the first winter I moved out here, and it must've snowed 15 or more times in the valley, and we topped it off with 11" on April 1-3. Last year we had a few good snows, but less than half the amount of snow from 22-23.

Fast forward to this winter, and I've had about 5" of snow total so far. Mountains are close to average, but most of that is from a 2 week period around Christmas. Lot of arctic air in the pattern so far in January, but very little moisture. That cold and dry pattern is nothing unusual for a La-Nina winter here though, but I'd sure like to get a firehose pattern off the Pacific soon.

We've got the 'opposites' here in upstate SC too, but I'd say we've returned to normal temps and slight;y dry. We've had several exceptionally mild winters in a row so this cold snap seems starker, but this is how I remember most winters being for most of my life here other than this cold snap maybe being 2-4 weeks early. As long as we don't get any significant ice storms I'm happy enough.

We had a tiny bit of snow that I had to shovel last week, and now with several days significantly above freezing, it's all gone. It's supposed to get up to 55F here this afternoon. While I personally hate winter and would normally be happy about warmer temps, I also hate this cold > warm > cold > warm thing we've got going on in our winters now. It makes it hard to adjust to anything, and I think it's extremely rough on the infrastructure. It also makes it harder to put up with the cold when it does come around, since neither me nor my pups have had time to acclimate to it.

"Up" is the key word there --glad you didn't get, uh, confirmation.

Laypeople like me should always read forecast discussions. So often you learn something -- say, how getting more rain in a shower can actually make heavier snow more likely:

Those that experience heavier showers could end up with cooler temperature
via wet-bulbing, and thus receive more snow than others.

Is it still happening today? I happened to me once yesterday, but my post ended up going through. I grabbed a screenshot of the error in case it continues to be an issue.
