Canoinhas - a tornado magnet in south Brazil

There have been more confirmed violent tornadoes in this county with twisters happening in the years of 1948, 1959, 1991, 1992, 2002 2007 and 2020, the deadliest of which was the 1948 one killing twenty-three people. The tornado of 1959 wasn't any less intense, leaving sixteen dead and throwing vehicles hundreds of feet into the air. About some of those storms:

The tornado that hit Canoinhas in 1948 was one of the most violent in the history of the state of Santa Catarina. According to the city's Historical Archive, the phenomenon occurred in the locality of Valinhos, in the North Plateau, and left a trail of destruction and death. The wind speed was estimated at 300 km/h, which corresponds to an F3 category tornado on the Fujita scale. At least twenty-three people lost their lives and over eighty were injured. The tornado was recorded on May 16, 1948, on a Sunday evening.

The locality of Rio dos Pardos suffered a devastating tornado in 1959, which left a scene of destruction and death. According to reports, sixteen people died and forty-five were injured. Houses were torn from the ground and objects were thrown long distances. Trees were uprooted and crops were ruined. A jeep traveling on the road was thrown by the wind. The damage was estimated at ten million cruzeiros. The next day, the landscape was desolate, with few traces of the life that had been there.

A tornado devastated Evaza Farm in Canoinhas, Santa Catarina, on September 6, 2002. It was the worst tornado recorded in the region since 1959. The phenomenon caused one death, five injuries, and significant property damage. Houses were ripped from the ground and thrown long distances. Trees were broken and launched into the air. Birds were found dead in the treetops. The fire department had difficulty reaching the disaster site as the road was blocked by logs and branches.

The most recent tornado in the region occurred on August 14, 2020, 20 km from Rio dos Pardos (Canoinhas), the same region that was hit by a violent tornado on August 13, 1959. According to the Civil Defense, the tornado had an F2 intensity on the Fujita scale, which measures wind strength, and caused damage to approximately 100 houses and five industrial sheds. No one was injured, but many families lost their belongings and needed humanitarian assistance.

Very interesting thread! Hope this is a worthy contribution.

On July 10, 1968, after sunset, a one kilometer wide tornado moved through the city of Pforzheim (>100,000 inhabitants) in southern Germany. Occasionally there was damage up to F4. Hundreds were injured and two died.

The tornado first moved through the village of Ottenhausen. The fatalities occured here.

In southwestern Pforzheim, a forest was largely destroyed and an industrial area damaged.

The tornado moved directly through the southern part of Pforzheim at one kilometer width. Mostly more moderate damage occurred here. However, there also was strong damage. Hundred of cars were thrown and mutilated.

In the southeastern parts of the city, more severe damage was caused again.

Informative post and thanks for brining this event to our attention! Definitely solid F3 damage in some of those pics. Structurally I don't see anything that would support an F4 rating - at least at face value, though the home in the second photo could qualify if it was two stories beforehand (European masonry structures don't have to be totally leveled to earn an F4 rating, and structures having their second floors sheared off have been rated as such). That tree damage looks seriously impressive though, especially for Germany.

Looking forward to seeing what other tornadoes you can shed some light on!

Another tornado from Germany that I find very interesting happend on May 13, 2015 along a very narrow and isolated path through several villages near Augsburg in Bavaria, southern Germany. It was one of three F3 tornadoes that happend in the country during May 2015.

The tornado intensified very quickly, causing significant tree damage the moment it first made ground contact in a forest in the village of Stettenhofen. Less than one kilometer (0.62mi) after it touched down this damage was caused to a concrete apartment building:

Another apartment building nearby had its entire roof including roof structure and gables ripped off.

After traveling several kilometers across open fields, the tornado casued damage in the village of Anwalting and passed over a chapel, which was heavily damaged. A forest near the chapel was destroyed.

The tornado then moved through Gebenhofen and Affing, causing heavy damage to several (often newly built) homes all within a very narrow < 150 meter wide path. Isolated walls collapsed and roof structures were completely destroyed.

Several vehicles weighing more than 2 tons were thrown and destroyed:

The upper floors of agricultural masonry buildings were completely destroyed.

It then weakened considerably and continued for several kilometers through forest areas and the city of Aichach, where moderate damage was caused. The tornado recieved a low end F3 rating and injured at least seven people.

I just saw on the wiki page of Tornadoes of 2023 that on April 28 a tornado in Indonesia killed 9. Do you have any more information about it? In my memory it is the deadliest tornado in Indonesia.

I’m also curious about that deadly Indonesia tornado. It happened in late April but there’s not much info on it.
I have my doubts that event was a legitimate tornado. The few damage photos I've seen look more like downburst damage (at least to me) and the only video I could find of the event shows strong straight line winds.

Someone updated a lot in the wiki page of tornadoes in Asia. I noticed that there was a tornado in 2015 killed 45 and injured hundreds in Peshawar Valley, Pakistan on April 26, 2015. The geographic conditions here looks like that of areas hit by fatal tornado in Nepal in 2019. However, I can found limited information about this tornado. I guess that the disappeared significant tornadoes in Bangladesh might 'migrated' to upstream Ganges Valley or even Indus Valley by climate change.
