On this day in 1974, Cyclone Tracy made landfall at Darwin, Australia packing sustained winds of 125mph, gusts to 145mph, with a pressure of 950mbar. Led to 71 fatalities and $645.35million in damages. It is the 2nd smallest tropical cyclone on record with gale force winds only extending out to 30 miles.
On this day in 1983, temperatures plunged to -1 in Huntsville, Alabama and 14 in Galveston, Texas. In Tupelo, MS, the low temperature was 0 and in Aberdeen, MS, the low temperature was -2. It only reached a high of 20 in Aberdeen and 17 in Tupelo.
On this day in 1987, Tucson, Arizona woke up to the first White Christmas in 47 years of records.
On this day in 1988, Las Vegas, Nevada saw snow for the first time on record.
On this day in 2004, New Orleans, Louisiana saw their first Christmas snow in half a century and the first snowfall in the city in 15 years.
On this day in 2010, North MS saw a White Christmas with up to one inch of snow in Amory, MS. A 16-year-old Johnny Parker of Smithville experienced his first White Christmas.
On this day in 2016, Super Typhoon Nock-ten made 8 landfalls in the Philippines. With max winds of 160mph, gusts to 180mph, with a pressure of 915mbar, it led to 13 fatalities and $123million in damages. It is the only known category 5 tropical cyclone on Christmas Day and the strongest tropical cyclone worldwide to occur on Christmas Day.
