Severe WX Severe Threat 17-18 March 2021

I don't find any of the Smartphone apps adequate for alerting at night while I am sleeping. The alerts are too brief and not loud enough. Someone needs to make an app that blasts a horn like a weather radio and for a long enough duration to actually wake up the dead. Maybe there is one but I'm not aware of it.

Depending upon your smartphone you can output audio using a 3.5mm jack to a speaker. Or, if you have a Bluetooth speaker that can stay charging and won't disconnect after a period of inactivity. I have a soundbar in the master bedroom and I connect it via Bluetooth. It'll wake the dead when the app alerts.

But, to your larger point, I absolutely agree a weather radio is the best option overall. However, it's probably too late for a lot of people to get one and set it up versus a quick download of an app for today's event. Hence my highlighting of the app.

I live in a hilly area and the NOAA weather radio stations that cover my area get blocked by the ridges in front of and behind my house. Even though the weather radio stays plugged up, I largely rely on the app nowadays because I've had warnings get missed before due to poor reception.

I'll also add I'm a little gunshy solely relying on NOAA weather radio because of what happened on 4/27. On that topic, everyone should make sure to change the backup battery in their weather radio if they can. If you lose power you want to make sure your unit can continue to receive alerts.
