Hurricane Melissa

I remember Ian and Otis very well, especially Otis.

Everybody was saying “oh Otis slop”, “weak Otis” and then it literally exploded outta nowhere into a historic Category 5 hurricane.

People need to take tropical cyclones seriously, no matter how weak or strong they are.

This is how insane Hurricane Melissa has become:

I was so unenthusiastic about Otis that I didn't track it and only found out about its C5 rampage while it was dissipating. So yea

I left school the evening before and it was a 60-kt tropical storm, and then I came back to school the next morning and saw it ragged inland still listed as a 105-kt Cat-3 and then I checked Wikipedia and saw the Cat-5 purple color on Otis and I was like “is this real?”

I couldn’t believe it. I was in disbelief discovering what had transpired overnight while I had been sleeping.

I tracked Otis from the start and unfortunately missed it’s very unexpected historic landfall peak.

Just woke up and saw NHC and Discord, *WTF TIs GOIN ON* 175mph and likely stronger holy crap dude
Yea, it’s been continuing its rampage for what seems like forever. In fact it may still be strengthening still, which is stunning.

Threat level is increasing rapidly for Montego Bay, Jamaica’s 2nd largest city.

These slight westward shifts will have a big impact on landfall due to the angular nature of Jamaica’s southern coast.

If Melissa clips the west side of the island it will experience relatively minimal land interaction compared with the more eastern track. This would mean Montego Bay could see devastating impacts even though it’s on the north side of the island

In Kingston and the east, the threat for flooding remains very high but the ceiling is perhaps a bit lower than yesterday. Good news in you’re in Kingston, bad news for Mo Bay/Negril

Based off of lightning, it IS strengthening. I wouldnt be shocked if it reached 180+ and sub 900 Mb if it keeps this up.
Allen in 1980 peaked at 165 kts (190 mph). I wouldn’t be shocked to see Melissa surpass that.
