January 23-25th Winter Wx

Have a friend in rural Nashville who isn't expected to get power back until 2/11. Been struggling to keep his house above 55 degrees.

Memphis friend had kids' school closed all week and they already cancelled tomorrow as well. Safe to say people in the state will remember this storm for the rest of their lives. I've never seen anything like it.

I mostly grew up in Memphis and recall one or two cases of being out of school for really long periods of time. It was always an ice storm or the combination of snow with ice on top that did it. This was back in the 1970's.

Well I survived the (non) catastrophe here in the foothills of SC. 1/4" ice followed by 3 3/4" of snow would have been a non-event but the very cold temps and hypothermia apparently took 6 lives locally with 4 of them being 59+ year old seniors :( Lost power1 1/2 days but hardly noticed it as we were well-prepared. Some neighbors cell service went 'emergency only' but mine stayed normal throughout.

I've never seen forecasts be so wrong from everybody- the NWS, TV, all the internet mavens too. The models were all wrong with my area; none of them showed anything moderate for precip; all showed huge amounts, I'm afraid this will be a winter-time 'Plainfield syndrome' with nobody believing them when we do get another big winter storm with them being so far off these two times.

If springtime came tomorrow I wouldn't complain.
