January 23-25th Winter Wx

One thing to look at for the GA crowd is the strength of the CAD. Globals/Ensembles tend to underestimate the depth and strength of the CAD this far out. The Euro solution, just as an example, features the high in a good position for a stronger CAD. For our more impactful ice storms in north and east Georgia, you really need that reinforcing shot of cold/drier air to maintain temps in the mid/upper 20s and offset WAA/freezing processes. At this point, trust the ensembles this far out but the deterministic runs are fun to look at.

That map depicts 10 inches of freezing precip over parts of west Georgia, and a foot at the ArkLaMiss triple-point. Crazy that it's even a possibility.

I think we are looking at a potential for a once in a generation storm here in the south if everything goes accordingly lol. I would MUCH rather have the snow/sleet solution than ice.

Yeah, snow is cool, but ice can just... go all the way away. Granted, even significant snow will cripple us down here because we just don't handle winter storms very well.

The new 18z GFS litterally has it snowing/sleeting/freezing rain in parts of central/north Alabama for over 35 hours. That's just flat out insane.
33 hours of that over me either freezing rain or snow. Ugh.

I must admit, this one has me nervous in northeast Georgia. Snow is fine, but it’s been a while since we’ve had an ice storm and this one has the potential to be one of the worst ever for my area. I live in the woods and have over 50 trees in striking distance of my house. None that overhang, but ice weight pulls it all down. Root balls start giving way. 1 inch of ice on a 50 foot oak is an extra 100,000 pounds of weight and I’ve got 90 footers surrounding me. Ha!

It’ll at least be exciting watching the models this week, but please let us go easy on the ice.

You trying to give me a heart attack??? Like another poster mentioned.. models definitely underestimate the strength of the CAD wedge! I remember reporting in to the FFC station that we had ice accumulation and therefore they extended their warning criteria southwards toward LaGrange! High the next day was to be in the 40’s.. with ice.. never made it past 32… no power 24 hours!
