Hurricane Hurricane Milton

Correction. Make that 171 lightning strikes in the eye

At this point, category doesn't really matter, the water has been piled up and has momentum to the northeast. The surge is going to be historic.
880 would mean ( gulp ) 200mph would be highly likely.
The stronger it gets, the greater the surge, no matter if it's a 4 or 3 at landfall.
I've seen what a cat 5 surge in a weakening cat 3 hurricane can do at landfall. I worked the aftermath of Katrina.
Yeah, the category at landfall really doesn't matter. the water has been piled up higher and higher and has momentum to the northeast. The surge is going to be historic.

The NHC has only assigned active hurricanes winds over 185 mph 1x & that was Patricia, which it gave 200, & that later turned out to be 215. I guess Allen had 190, but that was in 1980. I feel like the FL Keys Hurricane, Gilbert & Wilma peaked at higher than 185 given their extreme pressures. But the NHC stuck with 185, at least for Gilbert & Wilma. EDIT: And why was Camille scaled back from 190 to 175?

It's time for Florida to receive the Katrina language that someone posted the other day. In fact, it should be scaled UP even more from that language. Not trying to be apocalyptic, but from Crystal River/Cedar Key down to Marco Island -- everyone in those areas should be getting out. Cannot hope that the forecasted path is locked in or that the relatively smaller size compared to Helene is going to be salvation.

People need to get the hell out if they haven't already.

I was hoping two days ago he would be a weakening 4 at this point.
Instead he's rapidly strengthening 5.

There is still hope he weakens, but the stronger he gets tonight and tomorrow, the longer it will take to weaken, plus, the surge is already locked in no matter what.
That's what kills most people, not the wind.

Unfortunately, I'm sure hundreds, if not thousands, have made the choice to stay because you know "a hurricane never hits here".
