Enhanced Fujita Ratings Debate Thread

Also, off topic a bit but related to disputed intensities, the list that Rochelle comment was in response to contained some interesting picks:

Never seen Grand Rapids as a Palm Sunday F5 candidate before. That brings us up to 13 from that event. Is there more?
1. Tipton, IA (maybe)
2. Crystal Lake, IL
3. Grand Rapids, MI (maybe)
4. La Paz, IN (maybe)
5. Goshen, IN (maybe)
6. Rainbow Lake, IN
7. Coldwater Lake, MI
8. Sunnyside, IN
9. Kokomo-Greentown, IN
10. Lebanon-Sheridan, IN
11. Toledo, OH
12. Rockaway, OH (maybe)
13. Pittsfield-Strongsville, OH

Also, question for all of you: if you were to reanalyze Palm Sunday 1965, what major (and preferably certain, no "might be" or "would be") rating changes would you make?

Not sure on construction of these obviously, but this type of wholesale destruction definitely suggests something into the EF4 range vs. EF3 IMO.

I can confidently say that the contextual damage shown here definitely points to a tornado of EF4 intensity. Obviously, the construction quality of these homes is unknown, but there seems to be quite a bit of rowing and what looks to be some scouring and debarking of some trees.

Based on some of the contextual damage I would say it was an easy EF4.

After learning about the importance of bolt spacing the Washington-goldsby tornado’s under-rating becomes even more horrible.

One of the slabbed homes had a bolt spacing of 18 inches. Which is well above the requirement for an EF5 rating. It also had extreme contextual’s next to it. Completely scoured ground and debarked shrubbery. That should never have been rated lower than EF5.

I can…

Honestly, I don’t even know why people on this forum are seriously discussing anything that comes from him. Pretty sure I’m not the only one here who could tell you he is full of it based on his twitter posts and Wikipedia edits.
Oh, on his twitter he’s obviously full of it. I’d love to see his Wikipedia edits lol. I’m all for high schoolers being into meteorology, but he tries to speak as an authority and he’s so far from it

Most people that age are usually like that trust me. I am a 44 year old man and sometimes feel like I am full of it.

Edit....No hard feelings toward people in high school on this site. We actually have some pretty mature high schoolers on this site.

I can safely say for myself that I am a lot more mature than most high school students these days lol. Some high schoolers are full of it.

If I ever get, to the top of the business in terms of being a structural engineer, however it works, cause I’m not sure right now. I’m going to ensure, that any home me and “my” team builds, is built with upper end tornado resistant in mind. Cause I’m going into carpentry as a career. Which is a big first step. Will need to go too college for the engineering degree though.

But hopefully, lol, any home built by me, will never be rated any lower than “stronger than typical resistance” on the updated EF-scale. I’ll be using all the proper clips, brackets, bolts and facet’s that keep homes planted where they are if affordable.

I’m probably being guilty of wishful thinking here.
But, eh.

Same.

If someone posts BS, I don't care if they're a high school student, college student, kid or adult... they should be called out for it. BS is BS whether it's posted by an 8 year old or 80+ year old.

If I come across as harsh in my posts, it's because I'm not the type to blow smoke up peoples' a**es and tell them they're correct if they're obviously not.

(BTW, this isn't a jab at anyone on this site, just a general statement.)

edit: And to add, I'm not trying to portray myself as a supreme know-it-all tornado damage expert - I've been wrong several times myself, and the day I stop learning will be the day I die.

I thought hurricane strapping had something to do with securing the sill plates to the foundation until I learned they are a roof anchor.
I always learn things…eventually if it’s complicated.

From my stepdad who builds homes:
Typical bolt spacing is about 6-feet. 18 inches is WELL beyond typically required.
Thats just what I know; but if this is true, Goldsby's rating is criminal

Hey im actually about the same age as Nick! I plan on heading to college to study tornadoes, so we aren't much different zoomed out.

Difference is I know I'm wrong sometimes. Like I will admit, my feelings with Tim Marshall "rating" Matador were incorrect (He did not do that rating)
