2025 Political Thread

This guy is literally Hitler.

And events that came during the previous administration certainly would have made the Weimar Republic call and suggest a bit of a dial-back.

The two always go together: decadence and fascism (small "f").

Markets remain undefeated. Trump blinked.

The BBC agrees. Maybe they get paid by the word, though. ;)

...
That's why markets have surged on this news: Trump appears to have blinked, and the idea that he might be checked by the stock market, as many expected, has emerged intact.

But that’s not to say that the economy is completely out of the woods. After all, the president is still discussing a 125% tariff on China - America’s third largest supplier of imports a key source of clothing, shoes, furniture and electronics...

An interesting political choice of options for appealing to younger voters, whose future is on the line in all this, the year before a Congressional election, sending the price of smartphones and other tech to stratospheric levels.

If that doesn't inspire quick growth of backbone in "the People's Hall," then nothing can.

A little more good news:

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is auditing Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The probe, which has been ongoing since March, covers DOGE’s handling of data at several cabinet-level agencies, including the Departments of Labor, Education, Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, the Treasury, and the Social Security Administration, as well as the US DOGE Service (USDS) itself, according to sources and records reviewed by WIRED...

Wow! I think it’s great that 2 Senators on the floor of the Senate chamber are discussing Jesus.. His ministry.. and the Bible

It's not going to stop with just "illegal" immigrants.

Since we get so many poor attempts at trying to relate things to 1984 in here, thought I'd show a couple of examples of what actual Orwellian policy looks like.

First, folks can be deported simply because of their current or expected beliefs

Second, here's an ICE poster that talks about how the government's job is to stop the spread of ideas coming into the US:

Bernie Sanders and Judas Iscariot

Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”. He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. - John 12:3-6

Bernie Sanders only pretends to care about the poor. He complains about how inequitable capitalism is, and yet he has 3 houses. He used to hate millionaires until he became one. Now he says he hates billionaires. Also at Trump's SOTU speech in 2020, Trump said that 7 million people were able to get off food stamps. This made Bernie very angry because he obviously wants people enslaved to the government. If one of the "oppressed" (e.g. a Black person) becomes a conservative, they're immediately the enemy of the leftists. They will call you an "Uncle Tom" or "the Black face of white supremacy", like they did for Larry Elder.

Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” - John 12:7-8

The poor you will always have with you. That's something that socialists do not understand. They claim they can create a utopia where everyone will have what they need.
They say real socialism has never been tried. They say they will finally get it right this time. All you need to do is vote for them and put your faith in them. However the website for Democratic Socialists of America talks about Karl Marx and abolishing capitalism, so what they want is nothing like what they have in the Nordic countries. They may create equality of outcome as they promise, but everyone will be equally miserable except for the elites. History has taught us time and time again, but leftists never learn.

If Bernie Sanders does not change, it will be better for him had he never been born.

I try to stay away from posting in this thread, but there’s some genuine bot energy going on with the poster above me. I’m not directly accusing or anything, but good lord.

This is absolutely disgusting.

More details here. Homeland Security denied it was immigration enforcement and that it was a "wellness check," but the kids' caretakers denied that they had been contacted or had given approval.

Good for LAUSD and its personnel!

Inflation expectations for 12 months ahead was at 2.6% in November. They have now skyrocketed to 6.7%. 6.7% is the highest reading since 1981. 5 year inflation readings have also spiked.

As mentioned the other day, 10/30 year bond yields have risen substantially. Car loans, mortgages, and business credit will now be much more expensive.

The Federal Reserve cannot cut in this environment despite softening employment numbers in a number of sectors of the economy. If we don't see tariff resolution in the next several months, the Fed may be unable to cut at all until Q4. There's a non-zero chance the Fed has to INCREASE rates if CPI and PCE start to rapidly rise.

Torched a perfectly good economy for zero reason. Our trade deficit could've been addressed through much more targeted tariffs. China could've been brought to heel with proper trade diplomacy with tariffs used as a stick. Instead, we gave zero carrot to our allies and used the stick to bludgeon them. The claim that this was all part of the plan is belied by the fact Trump publicly admitted he got scared because of how the bond market was imploding.

Meanwhile, on the tax and privacy fronts (source):

...For the past three days, DOGE and a handful of Palantir representatives, along with dozens of career IRS engineers, have been collaborating to build a single API layer above all IRS databases at an event previously characterized to WIRED as a “hackathon,” sources tell WIRED. Palantir representatives have been onsite at the event this week, a source with direct knowledge tells WIRED.

APIs are application programming interfaces, which enable different applications to exchange data and could be used to move IRS data to the cloud and access it there. DOGE has expressed an interest in the API project possibly touching all IRS data, which includes taxpayer names, addresses, social security numbers, tax returns, and employment data. The IRS API layer could also allow someone to compare IRS data against interoperable datasets from other agencies...

The techies on bsky also seemed shocked that he chose Palantir, which was way over my head so I checked the company out on Wikipedia. That's quite a Controversies section.

How is it the liberal naysayers and doomsayers who say tariffs will lead to inflation and a major recession don't believe that taxing the rich and big corporations so that they "pay their fair share" won't lead to inflation and recession?
