I'm really surprised to see an EF2 rating for that spinup near the hospital in Fayetteville, TN. Looked very marginal on radar, and all the damage I've seen so far looked minimal. There must have been an isolated instance of more significant damage.

These kinds of videos tend to have the most impact on laypersons storm-footage-wise, at least amongst the people I know, since they really put you right there in the middle of it, in a familiar setting.

All that small debris and glass flying around is why I throw on the motorcycle riding gear if I need to take shelter. Figure it’ll do more good on me than flying out into the ether with the rest of my stuff if I were to take a hit.

Yeah, I done live super far to the East. I was getting kinda nervous. Didn't look great on the radar, but hearing locally something was happening... Nerves for sure.

Yeah I mean that's why they say to like put bike helmets on your kids and stuff, a significant percentage of the deaths in tornadoes are caused by trauma to the head/neck (I forget the exact stats but it's a lot).

Yeah, several of us were listening to scanner traffic from Amory last night. There were a number of addresses and streets given during radio calls that indicated a hit on the HS was pretty likely. There's also a middle school that potentially was in the path of the tornado as well but it was a much iffier possibility. Has anyone heard anything about the middle school?

Wouldn’t 170 mph be a low-end EF4 and a solid EF4 would be somewhere between 180 and 190 mph.

It's preliminary so basically just bare assessment is atleast low end ef4.

I think they have another team coming in to assess as well if I'm not mistaken.

It'll probably get bumped up to around 180 or 185 or something if I was guessing, doubting at this point it'll be near ef5 strength. But who knows

I didn't take that wind speed as final. I imagine they want the QRT to weigh in and mentioning 170mph was along the lines of we think it's an EF-4 with winds of at least 170mph." I didn't hear the quote, or its context, so that's just rank speculation on my part, however, I'm virtually certain they have not finalized wind speed or rating yet.

Sounds like a number or Talkweather members and/or their families were either impacted or almost impacted by the tornadoes yesterday. Thank goodness it seems that everyone is OK.

Close call with the 1998 F5 in Western Jefferson County is what got me into weather. It truly leaves a mark on your psyche.
