I would think that measures to help slow the spread of Covid should also help the spread of the flu. Add the flu vaccine and masks/social distancing and hopefully we can keep the flu at bay while trying to manage the Covid outbreak.

I hope bid day festivities in Tuscaloosa don’t mess that up.
The pictures coming out of Tuscaloosa from this past weekend were ridiculous. That's why I supported the schools going virtual. On the plus side, all of the concerns about the bars and restaurants suffering economically were alleviated!

UNC had to transition to online classes after one week because their student positivity rate went from less than 3% to over 13%. Doesn't bode well for the other schools starting up on campus right now.

What’s sad are the locals have been doing everything right trying by following guidelines. Most of the students I’ve seen, not going to the bars, but around town at stores and in larger groups have been doing things right. I just want to scream, for the love of all that is holy, WEAR THE MASKS!

That’s the first brick to fall on the ACC front that will lead to season cancellation by them.

Some good news out of Tuscaloosa is the number of inpatients with COVID has been nearly halved within the last 2 weeks at DCH. There is still ~20 or so ICU COVID patients. Problem I’ve heard from a couple of nurses I know there is that it’s a few critical care patients that remain on ventilators/BiPAP machines for weeks. Those patients add up and most are from long term care facilities.

Interesting thread. I suggest y’all give it a read.

I don’t know much about epidemiology but a lot of his sources are peer reviewed medical journals.

I don't know what the % is, but clearly this virus hits a relatively low % of the population and then has trouble continuing to spread. It is what is currently on-going in the southern US. Perhaps masks are helping some, but areas with mask ordinances are falling at the same rate as areas without mask ordinances.

There will always be exceptions to any rule, such as the rebuttal that Evan posted. It would seem to me that those prisoners are likely continually exposed to a high viral load because of the ventilation of the prison, and many that might have marginal immunity still get sick with that continued exposure.

UNA had 70 confirmed cases as of early last week when they took the counter down. That was before student started arriving on campus.

California, Texas, and Georgia seem to be struggling to get their daily case counts down when compared to Florida and Arizona.

I'd buy that those states just peaked later than the others mentioned, but California has been fighting COVID for as long as anyone. Texas, unfortunately, looks to pass Florida today to move into the number 2 slot overall for total cases.

Regionally, most of the Southeast seems to be experiencing sizeable decreases in case counts with the exception of Arkansas and Tennessee, and those two states are still experiencing decent decreases that will hopefully accelerate as time passes.

On the flip side, there's rising cases in parts of New England and the Midwest. Those areas seem likely to be the next ones to experience a surge in cases.

It’s my understanding that students went to a designated location to receive their Covid test before returning to campus. However, the student was given the q-tip swab to insert into each nostril. Do you really think the test was administered properly? I’m very skeptical of the results from some of these tests. We currently have an “undetermined” number of students in quarantine at UNA.

UA has a 29% positivity rate, but 90% of the overflow quarantine rooms are open. So, I'm not sure what's going on if the 400-ish isolation beds are largely still empty.

Meanwhile, in the current winter flu season . . . a surprise!

Apparently, travel restrictions, school closures, social distancing, and mask wearing have all but stopped flu from spreading in South Africa. Similar stories have emerged from Australia, New Zealand, and parts of South America.

The Northern Hemisphere hopes to be so lucky.

They go on to explain why we might not have such luck.
