5/5-5-6 2026 severe threat

Think that cell that came through ATL around 7:00pm was most of the fireworks for tonight… haven’t had much else in the way of thunder or even rain. Grateful it seems to have stabilized the atmosphere here. The storms in south MS definitely realized the full potential of this event.

Yeah I'm hoping the tornado watch for North Georgia is cancelled from I-20 northward before the watch scheduled expiration time.

FFC and SPC seem to be taking a cautious approach. SCP values are still as high as 4 from Atlanta to Athens, despite ongoing convection, so I guess they're keeping it on the off chance something spins up. I find that highly unlikely though at this point, I think things further south are really undercutting the environment up here.

The Purvis tornado is being overshadowed, but that town got hit pretty bad too. Seeing extensive damage to homes and businesses with roofs and walls missing. Also the small industrial area at the north edge of town has major damage with metal warehouse buildings destroyed and completely mangled.

If we could please wait for confirmation from *official* news media outlets on fatalities and not speculate or post some random Joe twitter page. The past two times we've had violent tornadoes, people posted that there were fatalies and it ended up not being true.

The only exception I think should be given is if PD/FD confirm on the scanner that there are fatalities.

For sure. There is one source that is usually correct but I won’t post it

I think this is a question for @JPWX...

When is the last time a Tornado Emergency was issued in an Enhanced Risk area? And while I'm at it, has more than one come out of an ENH before today?
March 24th, 2023 Amory, MS and Winona, MS. That's the only notable one that comes to mind in my area. Pasadena-Deer Park, TX January 24th, 2023 I believe was the last Enhanced Risk one.

Well, I guess I can’t blame them for being cautious given what happened in Mississippi. I could see wanting to message the conditional potential for spinups, but given there’s been convection to the north and south all evening, I’m not sure we’re going to be able to get even a QLCS with the strength to really get going. Hoping for a good soaking rain with maybe a few rumbles of thunder here or there.
