Winter Weather/Extreme Cold Threat 1/13-1/17

Continues to bulldoze the freezing line SE. Just south of Columbus to just north Cullman to Huntsville.

Interesting -- the 18z HRRR had Birmingham at 45 degrees with 36 degree dew point at 0z tonight. The observed surface sounding was 50 degrees with a 37 degree dew point. To me, this makes a slushy freezing rain/sleet/mix situation much more likely than snow, given BMX is 5 degrees warmer than the models predicted. (For reference, the same model has Nashville's observations at 0z pinged almost perfectly.)

On a related note, the 0z HRRR is very aggressive with the freezing rain forecast across N MS and N AL, with a swath of 0.2+ inches. This amount could begin to be problematic for sure.

8pm. Check the banding back to the west. Fun stuff.

That little snow train back into MS and AR is going to dump a lot more on N. AL.

A total snow lover thing to say - but the sledding in TN, N/AL and N/MS tomorrow is going to be EPIC. Snow on top of a layer of sleet? Ridiculously fast sledding. I'm just saying.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. That banding you highlighted on radar has to be sleet to get those returns I assume.

Mesoscale banding. When those get cranking, it can pretty drastically increase rain, sleet or snow amounts. Bright yellow is either sleet or rain. With all the reports of snow where it is hitting already, I would bet mostly sleet. Still messy. Mother nature is going to throw us some curve balls tonight I believe. NW MS is in for quite a ride for sure.

What's y'alls thoughts about southern North MS counties? Particularly Monroe
