I wouldn't consider this upcoming event major (although any time the south gets even a dusting is notable). Unusually warm ground and rather marginal surface temps will likely preclude major accumulations (if any) outside higher elevations.

Now the arctic blast will be unusual but should be short lived (4/5 days).

I consider any snowfall of 2" or more during March as major. Both the 00z NAM and GFS are progging snowfall reaching/ exceeding that criteria in far north Georgia, the southern Appalachians, and portions of the Carolinas.

HRRR has really backed of wintry precip totals....indicating likely a dusting, if that, across southern TN. Really no accumulation in North AL or GA. Higher accumulations are relegated to higher elevations.

OK, guys...I need some guidance. My in laws are wanting to drive from here (Decatur, AL) to Gatlinburg, TN tomorrow afternoon.

What are we thinking will happen in that path? Will it be safe?

They are trying to decide whether to drive there or not.

Still snowing pretty good south of Nashville. Just talked to my friend who just got home and said that I65 clear but it was to see at times. Amazing how many different types of weather we have had the past few days. Here is a facebook update from Daphne DeLoren out of Nashville.

Had about an hour of big heavy wet snowflakes. Looked like feathers and the size of silver dollars. The ground was covered. Maybe a half inch. I'll take it after the winter we had. Plus, it all happened with temps above freezing. 34 degrees.

I was in Coffee County, Tn. this weekend. Flurried and sleeted off and on most of yesterday. Picked up late afternoon. I would guess two inches. Drove back over Monteagle today and looks like they had more.

What happened to the forum ? Looks great.

Managed a half inch out of this up here in Blowing Rock. This has been an absolutely horrific winter by mountains standards. Currently sitting at a very generous 12.5" of snow on the year (more likely closer to 10 but I've been generous with some of our dustings). Seasonal average is 32". The ski resorts have really been hurting for the second year in a row.
