Had an eight-hour flight to Vienna yesterday so I finally had time to watch Twisters. My thoughts are as follows:
- the homages to the original Twister were nice at first but there were so many that it felt like they didn't really have many original ideas and were relying on nostalgia for the original to make the movie enjoyable (and it also made the plot kind of predictable)
- the plot was actually stupider than the original, but the movie lacked the fundamental silliness that made the lack of plot cohesion in the original acceptable
- they were not particularly subtle with who the yahoo Youtube chaser dude was based off of, but I thought it was funny, and the role reversal of the "good" and "bad" guys was one of the few interesting plot ideas they had
- the opening sequence was way less effective than the one in the original even though it was way more involved and was too melodramatic to really make me like not-Jo (props for showing why hiding under overpasses is a bad idea, at least, but kind of cancelled out by showing the car's speedometer hit 80 and them still getting caught by the tornado)
- speaking of, the actress who played not-Jo wasn't even born when the original Twister was made, which makes me feel absolutely ancient
- having not-Jo fall in love with not-Reed made no sense to me, the love story in the original was nonsensical too but it wasn't taking itself nearly as seriously
- needless to say that the actual science of what they were trying to do was completely ridiculous and the lack of realism really broke my immersion, the original worked because even though it was exaggerated, it was still based on a real science project. the Youtube clowns, who were intended to be the comic relief, ended up being more realistic than the serious science.
- and I think the worst crime of all was that the special effects were...not all that special. I unironically think the tornadoes in the original were scarier than the ones in the sequel, despite nearly 20 years of technological progress
I guess almost everything I said here was negative but I promise I did enjoy the movie. It just didn't have the magic of the original.
editing to add a couple more things I forgot due to jet lag:
- not-Jo had serious Mary Sue energy and I wish they had put some effort into giving her some actual characterization and making her seem more like a real person (the whole "instincts" thing was dumb in the original too but they made it central to the character here which made it even worse)
- the ending was awful, combining deus ex machina via nonsense science and a worse version of the strapping yourself into a barn scene from the original
- obviously they couldn't really recreate Dusty as a character, but him not being there showed how integral he was to the first movie being good/funny
- having the final scene take place in El Reno was a bit on the nose, not sure why they went with that honestly
