I like his lottery ticket analogy, as it can pertain to more than just the El Niño.
At the end of the day, ENSO sets the pattern. A La Niña doesn’t mean a high-end event is guaranteed, it just means the pattern provides more chances (more troughs) for those events to happen.

Replying to this because we got a big jump from the looks of it. Might exceed +2.5 C briefly here, but it looks like it'll hold off for the next few days with the fact that it plateaued again. Probably only a matter of time though.

This El Nino ain't gonna be as strong as y'all think it will. Yeah, it'll be strong, but not record breaking. But then again who listens to a guy with a speech impediment.
 
I feel as if there is a slight "doomcasting" to this el nino, a lot of people think its the 'end of the world' or something like that, maybe thats just the dumb ones, but theres a lot of them. I do agree that this is a pretty major el nino, and itll definitely have some sort of effect on the winter season and next spring. we'll just have to wait it out and see i guess.

I always appreciate your insight JP, and I’m certainly not writing off your takes, I fully agree with them. But isn’t it already a satisfying the criteria for a very strong Niño? I, for one, am certainly not saying it’s going to be record breaking (1877 and probably 97-98 were more extreme events) and I’d say the majority of reasonable discourse here has been composed of some here trying to put down the fearmongering.

Yes it is at 2.0 which does meet the criteria for very strong. but it's not OMG record breaking.
