Severe Weather Threat - January 8th-9th, 2024

lol….

Go to bed! Weather radios should wake you up lol
Considering I'm on the west coast these storms are rather unlikely to impact me directly, I just love radar watching lol... Though I have been operating on 5 hours of sleep all day and do have to be at work an hour early tomorrow. Thank goodness caffeine was invented...

Something to be on the lookout for. The main threat has shifted well into the nocturnal hours. I don't know about the Alabama coast and the Florida panhandle, but many cities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast do not have tornado sirens. If you have a loved one in that area, please make sure they have a way to be alerted about the weather.

Wind gust of 49mph at Bham airport around 7:40 PM CST. Interesting to see all the cells developing to the south of the rain mass over central AL. Gradient winds are no joke this evening. Power outages are up to over 26K statewide.

I feel like the low level cap is what's holding the event back at the moment. Kind of saw this coming, as this is usually how a lot of these events have went in the cold season. Damaging winds are going to continue to be a real problem. Hopefully people stay weather aware tonight.

Inflow layer SRH >900 m2/s2. We knew this was coming though, it was well advertised by models far in advance, even the GFS which usually isn't this precise with such details. Fortunately the thermodynamics have kept the event in check so far, but as we know all it takes is one.

Yeah, though always a bit crazy seeing the forecasted values irl when they're like this.

The Twitter kiddos are already bustposting on birdsite, even though MOB didn't expect much activity until after midnight CST.
