Severe Weather Threat - January 8th-9th, 2024

The HRRR is still playing catch-up with instability when it initializes lol. Don't know if that'll play into what happens further east. But good grief HRRR , get your stuff together lol.

As far as tonight’s National Championship Game in Houston, at least one media outlet in Seattle is giving Huskies fans in Houston a breakdown on the upcoming severe weather risk tonight. According to this article, both the states of Washington and Oregon have never been under a Tornado Watch. I really hope emergency managers are giving factual information to those from Seattle attending the game what to do in a tornado warning because many don’t have experience with severe weather.

...20Z Update...
The primary changes to the outlook were to trim probabilities from
the northwest to reflect the cold frontal passage, and expand
probabilities southward along the cold front into central TX, where
recent storm development has been noted within a favorable
environment.

Otherwise, the previous outlook reasoning remains valid. Parts of
southeast TX are being monitored for supercell maturation, with
potential for all severe hazards. See MCD 17 and Tornado Watch 1 for
more information regarding the short-term threats in this area.

An extensive QLCS is still expected to develop this evening and move
eastward along the Gulf Coast, with recent HRRR runs suggesting some
potential for prefrontal supercell development. Any mature
pre-frontal supercells could pose a strong tornado threat late
tonight across parts of the central Gulf Coast, with damaging wind
and line-embedded tornadoes also possible with the primary QLCS. A
Moderate Risk upgrade remains possible with the 01Z update,
depending on observational and short-term guidance trends regarding
northward advance of the warm front and potential for mature
prefrontal supercells overnight.

Text from D1 update (No MOD now, but possible with next update):

..20Z UPDATE

THE PRIMARY CHANGES TO THE OUTLOOK WERE TO TRIM PROBABILITIES FROM THE NORTHWEST TO REFLECT THE COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE, AND EXPAND PROBABILITIES SOUTHWARD ALONG THE COLD FRONT INTO CENTRAL TX, WHERE RECENT STORM DEVELOPMENT HAS BEEN NOTED WITHIN A FAVORABLE ENVIRONMENT.

OTHERWISE, THE PREVIOUS OUTLOOK REASONING REMAINS VALID. PARTS OF SOUTHEAST TX ARE BEING MONITORED FOR SUPERCELL MATURATION, WITH POTENTIAL FOR ALL SEVERE HAZARDS. SEE MCD 17 AND TORNADO WATCH 1 FOR MORE INFORMATION REGARDING THE SHORT-TERM THREATS IN THIS AREA.

AN EXTENSIVE QLCS IS STILL EXPECTED TO DEVELOP THIS EVENING AND MOVE EASTWARD ALONG THE GULF COAST, WITH RECENT HRRR RUNS SUGGESTING SOME POTENTIAL FOR PREFRONTAL SUPERCELL DEVELOPMENT. ANY MATURE PRE-FRONTAL SUPERCELLS COULD POSE A STRONG TORNADO THREAT LATE TONIGHT ACROSS PARTS OF THE CENTRAL GULF COAST, WITH DAMAGING WIND AND LINE-EMBEDDED TORNADOES ALSO POSSIBLE WITH THE PRIMARY QLCS. A MODERATE RISK UPGRADE REMAINS POSSIBLE WITH THE 01Z UPDATE, DEPENDING ON OBSERVATIONAL AND SHORT-TERM GUIDANCE TRENDS REGARDING NORTHWARD ADVANCE OF THE WARM FRONT AND POTENTIAL FOR MATURE
PREFRONTAL SUPERCELLS OVERNIGHT.

Hey Everyone! Just checking in. It’s windy and cool down here in Carrabelle. I received this from Franklin County (FL) EMA

Severe Weather Expected
Severe weather is expected over the next 36 hours. The first wave will impact Franklin County at about 12:00 AM to 03:00 AM on the morning of Tuesday, January 9th. The second, more significant wave will arrive at about 09:00 AM and last until the midafternoon. Hazards include the potential for tornadoes, flooding, and winds of 70-80 mph.

Due to the saturation of the ground, it will be easier for trees to fall in the wind. If you come across a fallen tree or tree limb, DO NOT touch it. It may hide an active power line and can pose an electrocution hazard.

As of the time of this publication, Franklin County is under a Wind Advisory until 05:00 PM on January 9, 2024.

Due to these conditions, Franklin County Schools, Project Impact, the NEST in Eastpoint and Carrabelle, Property Appraiser's office, Tax Collector's office, and county government offices will be closed tomorrow, January 9, 2024.

If you live in an area that is prone to coastal and/or riverine flooding, please secure your belongings and be ready to move to higher ground.

As a result of the elevated wind speeds, the possibility exists for bridges throughout Franklin County to be closed to all traffic. This will occur if the wind achieves a sustained speed of 45mph. Please keep this in mind and monitor wind conditions throughout the day.

If you must travel, use extreme caution as conditions can change very quickly.

Please report any power outages to Duke Energy by calling (850) 769-3766 or visiting their website.

Pay close attention to Beach Flags. If Red Flags are flying, stay out of the water.

Make sure to monitor the local news, WOYS, and Franklin County Emergency Management Facebook page for updates. Sign up for AlertFranklin for real time updates regarding weather conditions and road closures.
