Severe Weather 2025

Something else @slenker on plains set ups, and this is something I learned from reading both Fred’s and @CheeselandSkies posts. The plains are pretty close to their EML source region. So it’s actually not uncommon for the cap to be in place for an event, erode, and then build back in as the day goes on with the Southwest flow. This actually happened on 5/3/99, and while this could be a detriment to more maturing updrafts, full fledged mature supercells like the Bridge Creek supercell can simply brush it off. The cap also built back in on 5/20/2019. Compare that to over here in Dixie, most of the time when the cap erodes, it’s gone.

Thank you very much @ColdFront. Have been tracking tornadoes many years and it is true Oklahoma and the plains are so finicky, yet many consider this the heart of tornado alley.has there been a shift, or has it always been iffy?

It’s always been prone to those iffy setups. I grew up on 1990s and 2000s storm stories where it seemed like every big tornado outbreak was plains based. However, for every 4/27/91 and 5/3/99, there are countless blue sky bu$ts lol

Just updated my PDS Tornado/Severe Thunderstorm Watch Spreadsheet.

PDS Tornado Watch Count (2000 thru April 2nd, 2025): 295
PDS Severe Thunderstorm Watch Count (2000 thru 2024): 44

From 2000 thru April 2nd, 2025, there has been 48,155 total miles encompassed by PDS Tornado Watches and 6,965 total miles encompassed by PDS Severe Thunderstorm Watches. Total Miles Combined (PDS TOR/SEV): 55,120 miles. This does NOT include the regular watches.

That is quite impressive.
