Severe Threat May 15-16, 2025

I’ll be honest, and there likely have been injuries with this tornado, but “declaring a mass casualty event” is overused because we don’t know what it means for them. Weather twitter just runs with it thinking the worst. A mass casualty, or even mass fatality, event will be drastically different for every county. There are counties in Georgia where a car accident with 5 patients requiring transport would be a mass casualty event.
We’ve seen that language used often for situations where many are injured. Let’s just hope that’s all that’s happened versus a potential mass fatality event.

What would the reason be, then? Or is it just not known at this time?
Not to derail. Depends on the NWS office. Each office may have their own criteria for issuing TOR Emergencies (Officially, I have no idea, but it makes sense they would).

A second tornado is now down west of London. Extensive debris fallout is ongoing from the first storm.

This is not only stupidly wrong, but inappropriate at this time.
Actually it isn't. NWS Jackson is one of the understaffed offices and it is directly because of the Trump cuts. The second part is speculation, but the first part is reality. Frankly, it's not inappropriate either when it is affecting an ongoing major severe weather event.

Actually it is. Be better.
