This tornado just will not stop. I'm almost questioning if it's actually one tornado or a family at this point. Is there any chance it might have lifted briefly in some of the rural spots in its path?

Sounds like a possibility. Of course we'll know for sure when NWS BMX surveys the damage.

So why are storms to the west and northwest of Birmingham not really ramping up?

Low level clouds are racing outside. Feels very eerie, has warmed up a good bit.

Feeling warm and soupy here in the West ATL metro. Usually not a good sign around these parts.

That's... ominous. Two days I've noticed that phenomenon. 8/18/2005 (Stoughton, WI F3) and 4/9/2015 (Rochelle, IL EF4).
