Utter catastrophe unfolding on the western half of Jamaica right now 
I fear we're going to see death tolls in the thousands here. The humanitarian crisis that's going to occur in the next few weeks will also be immense and tragic.

Winds are down to 165 MPH with latest advisory.
The 3:00 pm position update said 160 mph and 906 mb.
I know it’s a little bit of guesswork now but amazed this is still a Cat 5 hours after landfall.

Is there a chance for Melissa to briefly re-establish and strengthen a bit before Cuba or is its time in the spotlight just done now? I’d assume so but this thing has surprised me countless times.

I assume it'll try to get its act together a little, but it's gonna start to fight 20kts of shear before reaching cuba.

Real talk, considering the water past Jamaica is warm as well, it could, even if only briefly, intensify and possibly reach Cat-5 again. However, it would be not nearly as strong as it was before landfall in Jamaica. However there is around 20 knots of shear so it isn't going to be a guarantee.

Another aspect to consider, the sensory overload those in the Hurricane are experiencing with the high pitched roar of the winds and the headaches caused by the extremely low pressure. Say a prayer for those especially with sensory processing disorder who are in the direct path of Melissa.
Starting to emerge back over water now. A close to S->N trip, which I really think is the best we could have hoped for. Hopefully this mostly spares Kingston, so that relief for the western part of the island can come in there.
A nightmare for elderly folks, people with developmental conditions and more.
Still very concerned about the smaller communities in the southwest, and Montego Bay. Those little towns add up to dozens of thousands, and they're spread out which will make it harder to deliver high volumes of timely aid to everyone.

I can't believe it traversed almost the entire island at cat 5 strength. I assume it probably won't get back up to cat 5 before it hits Cuba but still.

Hurricane Melissa now ties with the “Labor Day” Hurricane (1935) as the most intense hurricane (in terms of pressure, not wind speed) to make landfall… EVER

The fact that these type of storms will only continue to get more common over time is…yeah.
