Just finished listening to that part. Ladue thinks they already secured the funding. Basically Lyza putting together a team and re analyzing all strong tornadoes of the last 15 years. That would be absolutely insane! (in the best way)I'm surprised no one has mention what Lyza (NSSL) is trying to do, and Jim mentioned it in the podcast, but he is working to reanalyze intense tornadoes over the last decade plus. Whether that actually occurs or is considered official is a different story. I don't believe there are any other internal plans to officially analyze previous tornadoes yet.
Oh we’ve been talking about him and his efforts a ton, although a good portion of the conversation has probably been in private messages. A small group of us has actually been trying to get in touch with him, particularly regarding a way to get the lofted fertilizer tank from Vilonia independently calculated. But if he’s already on it and has funding for a full scale reanalysis, then that works too. We just want to see past and recent EF ratings corrected some way and somehow, and we don’t really care how it happens as long as it gets done. LaDue absolutely did not say there was tree damage in Greenfield consistent with the new EF5 criteria from the updated scale. He simply showed a map overlay of treefall pattern forensic analysis in Greenfield, and stated that the treefall analysis came out in the EF5 range. That’s a completely different, separate thing. It has nothing to do with the updated scale’s actual EF5 tree damage criteria, nor the root-balling that defines it, neither of which were even mentioned when Jim was discussing Greenfield. If you’re going to make a claim and paraphrase from a video, please make sure you actually understand what is being conveyed. That part was a frustrating and frankly disappointing watch as a result. I got all excited and extrapolated a bunch of positive news based on a misunderstanding. Other than that it was an interesting and informative video, and my sentiments about the future of the tree scale remain the same.

I did laugh out loud when I saw John Robinson as one of the key members on the latest EF scale committee on Ladue’s slide. Especially with his fingerprints all over the precedent setting that directly led to the EF5 drought. Seems he’s still heavily involved in the new EF scale conversations.

Very nice to see so much momentum in seemingly trying to correct the wrongs made in the past; the tornadoes Im almost certain are going to be upgraded is the 2021 Kentucky tornado and Vilonia.
Can anyone point me to good images of damage from Chapman on this thread? I've definitely seen them before but I'd like a refresher on why it's so infamously lumped with the more "obvious" missed EF5s.Hopefully Chapman is included even though that thing is a tad harder to get an upgrade for.
LaDue is a big proponent of using tree and vegetation damage to help ascertain violent ratings, so no surprise there. I really like Jim because he’s willing to get creative and be forward thinking when it comes to EF Scale science and application, and he’s never too unreasonable or overly conservative. He’s also the main consultant for PREVOTS, and given the recent vegetation damage based F4 in Brazil, the connection there is pretty obvious. I’d really like to see him and Tony Lyza take the reins in terms of being the main top authorities in damage survey consultation, rather than Marshall if I’m being honest. Marshall has a somewhat dismissive, old school, “don’t rock the boat” approach that I’m not a huge fan of. Lyza and LaDue are just so much more forward thinking.
Also shout out to @Grand Poo Bah because I think he picked up on this before anyone. Remember the post he made about Greenfield in which he noted numerous root-balled trees? That’s probably the smoking gun right there. Remember, EF5 tree damage on the new scale has nothing to do with stubbing and debarking. Instead, it’s defined as when 20% or more trees in a grove or wooded area are root-balled with greater than normal resistance present. What is greater than normal resistance? That would be scenarios like very large, deep rooted trees being root-balled, or trees being root-balled while not in leaf, such as what we saw in Bremen. Given the time of year that Greenfield occurred, it’s gonna be the first of those two scenarios. Also I’m amending my opinion on Greenfield. If LaDue says it meets the EF5 tree criteria, that is good enough for me. Go ahead and upgrade it.
Also, I don’t see this as unexpected at all. This is exactly why I always say approaching the EF Scale problem with a bad faith, “nothing will ever change” mindset isn’t helpful or even valid really. I made a long post explaining that we are clearly at a point where the tide is starting to turn, the current overly conservative interpretation of the scale is being increasingly scrutinized at a higher level, and we are slowly making our way towards a more reasonable version of the scale that puts more weight on things like vegetation and contextual damage. It’s going to be slow, and we are going to have events that result in a mixed bag of good and bad precedents being set like Enid. But I can’t remember a time like this where we had an ongoing stream of positive tidbits and hints of progress clearly happening behind the scenes. It’s not going to happen overnight, but I maintain that what we are seeing now is things finally turning in the right direction as we approach 2030. Science takes time, and if we are patient and take the little victories one at a time, those little victories will start piling up and amount to meaningful changes. I truly believe that.
