ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY STATUS REPORT
U.S. Geological Survey
Wednesday, May 17, 2017, 12:48 AM AKDT (Wednesday, May 17, 2017, 08:48 UTC)

BOGOSLOF VOLCANO (VNUM #311300)
53°55'38" N 168°2'4" W, Summit Elevation 492 ft (150 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WARNING
Current Aviation Color Code: RED

Following the explosive eruption that occurred at 22:32 AKST tonight (06:32 UTC May 17) and lasted about 73 minutes, seismicity and infrasound as detected on neighboring islands has been quiet. The eruption produced an ash cloud that moved southwest along the edge of a mass of weather clouds as seen in satellite images.

Bogoslof volcano remains at a heightened state of unrest and in an unpredictable condition. Additional explosions producing high-altitude volcanic clouds could occur at any time. Low-level explosive activity that is below our ability to detect in our data sources may be occurring. These low-level explosions could pose a hazard in the immediate vicinity of the volcano.

The Aviation Color Code remains at RED and the Alert Level remains at WARNING.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Marine Weather Statement indicating trace amounts (less than 1 mm) of ashfall are possible in the region from Cape Sarichef to Nikolski.

A SIGMET warning for aviation is in effect for the volcanic cloud at an altitude of 34,000 ft above sea level. Status of the ash cloud forecast can be found at the National Weather Service Alaska Aviation Weather Unit website at http://aawu.arh.noaa.gov/
